The Longchamp that we all know today has been judged to be; too old, too big, too costly and not used enough. France Galop has therefore developed a project in order to “recreate a racecourse more functional, more comfortable, more welcoming and more green while remaining the International window to French flat racing”, according to Henri de Pracomtal.

The Conseil Municipal Stand will be destroyed and in it’s place will be a building capable of hosting temporary structures during Arc weekend. The heart of the racecourse will be a reconstructed Jockey-Club Stand, an entirely redesigned parade ring, a new technical building and 40 extra stables. A Fibresand track will be created to increase the number of race days from 30 to 45 or 50 per year. The new structures will features restaurants but will also be capable of hosting conferences and events.

The cost of this development is estimated between €55 and €75 million. Chantilly Racecourse cost €25 million to redevelop whereas the cost of Ascot Racecourse came to €250 million. The project will start in the summer of 2010, with the racecourse closing after the Arc in 2012 and reopening summer 2014. France Galop have not for the moment announced where the Arc will be held in 2013.
