Thursday 21st January 2010, Pau. (www.leblogdeparisturf.com) Guy Cherel once more achieved a feat at Pau when his two runners took the first two spots in the € 32,000 Prix de Baretous Chase (4yo Females-3,700m). Although Califète Royale (Califet) won easily, Keeping Gold (Goldeneyev) was very impressive in the finish. "They are two very different fillies. Califète Royale is very small, but has a big heart like her mother, Marie des Epeires (Rose Laurel). Keeping Gold is very big, is better going left handed and will be more at ease at Auteuil. The two of them could go for the "Palaminy" Chase (4yos -3,900m) without any problems, but I also have Kriss William (Califet) and Récalcitrant (Equerry) at home, so we’ll see..." confided the trainer, after what was his 8th winner of the meeting – the 9th came an hour late thanks to Quetzal Bay (Ungaro).
Ridden confidently by Cyrille Gombeau, Califète Royale took the lead when jumping the wall, followed by her stable companion, Keeping Gold, and also by Marvaline (Martaline). "The jockey of Keeping Gold said that she could have won, but his orders were to wait until the last hurdle, which he did. I didn’t want the same thing to happen as Bretaye (Astarabad) last Sunday, who fell at the last when she was assured the win,” added Guy Cherel.

Back in third, Marvaline was not disgraced having looked the winner coming into the final straight. Further back, Miss Yang (Bahhar) finished the race without incident, after her recent fall on the flat.

Navarre – Loup de Mer takes hurdling in his stride

At the age of 8, Loup de Mer (Law Society) is adapting well to his new jumping career. He proved this by winning the €30,000 Prix de la Navarre Hurdle (5yo+ - 3,500m).
An easy winner on his first attempt over hurdles, the Leenders family homebred made a good impression once again when beating some classy horses, such as La Chartreuse (Dernier Empereur) and Panzara d'Airy (Cadoubel). Ridden patiently by Julien Join, the son of Law Society showed superiority in the finish despite La Chartreuse’s strong attempts to fight him off. “If he comes out of this race well he will go for the Grande Course de Haies de Pau” explained Grégoire Leenders. “He is an old horse, who needs to be ridden patiently at the back of the field. That way he can conserve his speed for the finish”, he added.

Gramont – Positive start for Nadiya de la Vega

Bred by Haras de la Vega, Nadiya de la Véga (Lost World ex. Shinobie) made a winning debut in the €30,000 Prix de Gramont  Hurdle(4yo Females-3,500m). The representative of Jacques Ortet started to make up ground on the far side, after sitting patiently at the back of the field, before effortlessly leaving her rivals in her wake. Hailovyou (Homme de Loi) finished well and the fall of Sweet Brune (Laveron) at the last hurdle, after losing the advantage, should be noted
