Thursday 7th October 2010, Saint Cloud (www.jourdegalop.com) Maxios (Monsun), half brother to champion Bago (Nashwan), was the horse on everyone’s lip on Thursday at Saint Cloud. The Niarchos family’s representative did not disappoint when winning the €80,000 Prix Thomas Bryon (Gr3 – 2yos – 1600m) even if only by a short head. However it must be taken into account that Maxios had only run on one previous occasion whereas his runner up Private Jet (Aussie Rules) has had six previous starts.  When posed the question as to whether Maxios will now go for the Critérium International (Gr1), Alan Cooper, manager to the Niarchos family, replied: “It is not certain that he will run again this year. Jonathan Pease said he wanted to wait and see how he came out of this race. Next year he should follow the classic programme.”

Born in 2001, Bago was the first foal out of Moonlight’s Box (Nureyev) to appear on the track. Since then there have been five others; Million Wishes (Darshaan), Silhouetting (Hernando), Beta (Selkirk), Makani (A.P. Indy) and now Maxios.

The Alain de Royer Dupré trained Birzali (Kalanisi) opened his record in the €34,000 Prix Rheingold (3yos – 2100m) and in doing so providing stable jockey Christophe Lemaire with his third winner of the meeting. The Khalid Abdullah representative English Summer (Montjeu), brother of Polish Summer, finished three quarters of a length behind in second place after a hard fought battle with the winner.

Prince d’Almaty (Miesque’s Son) finished well to take third place a further three lengths behind.

Bred by the Aga Khan Studs, Birzali is out of Bernimixa (Linamix), winner of the Prix de Pomone (Gr2). Before Birzali, she produced Béret Rouge (Red Ransom), who finished third in the Prix des Chênes (Gr3), and Berouni (Peintre Célèbre), a winner at Longchamp before being exported to Hong

Kong.
