Monday 13th September 2010, Maisons Laffitte (www.jourdegalop.com) Second in the Prix Robert Papin (Gr2) and fourth in the "Morny" (Gr1), Broox (Xaar) dropped back in class in the €80,000 Prix d'Arenberg (Gr3-2yos-1100m) and as expected won this race from start to finish in impressive style. Broox controlled the entire race and needed no encouragement from his jockey Olivier Peslier, who never touched his whip, to win by two and a half lengths and give trainer Eoghan O'Neill his first Group success in France. “We had the choice to run in England last week or here”, explained his trainer. “We choose Maisons-Laffitte for him to make the job easier. We bought him for only €18,000 (Arqana, October 2009) and I am very pleased for his owners.”
Olivier Peslier, who has ridden Broox on all of his starts except on his debut, said afterwards; “He tenses up behind other horses. Today I found him very relaxed in front. With every race he strengthens more and is more calm.”
Chinese Wall (Aussie Rules) finished a decent second after her success in the Prix de la Vallée d'Auge (L). She will now be prepared for the Prix Eclipse (Gr3) on November 1st.
Bred at Haras du Logis (Julian Ince), Broox is the third produce out of Miss Brooks (Bishop of Cashel). His full brother, Haybrook, won twice as a 2 year old in the UK before leaving for Hong Kong. As mentioned above, Broox was purchased by Eoghan O’Neill at the Arqana Yearling Sales in October 2009 for €19,000 (click here for catalogue page).
Caro - Grand Vent Impresses
Favourite in the €29,000 Prix Caro (2yo Males-1600m), the André Fabre trained 2 year old, Grand Vent (Shirocco) came from last to first in the straight to win by a length and a half. On jumping out of the stalls he was knocked off balance by Amaru (Xaar) and took some time to get into his stride. He made his move three hundred metres from the line and had a very good run to confirm the good impression he made on his first start at Compiègne when he finished an unlucky fourth. That run was over 1400 metres and it seems that the extra 200 metres on Monday was more to his liking.
Bred by Darley, Grand Vent is out of Housa Dancer (Fabulous Dancer), who was also trained by Andre Fabre. She won the Prix Finlande (L) as a 3 year old before finishing third in the Prix d'Astarté (Gr2 at the time). She was then exported to the USA where she took second place in a Gr1 as a 5 year old. Housa Dancer has also produced Bushman (Maria's Son), a Listed and Gr3 winner over 1,700m in the UK. Even though she is the daughter of Prix de Diane (Gr1) winner Bright Sky (Wolfhound),
Crystal Palace - Blagueuse over true distance
Blagueuse (Statue Of Liberty) proved that she is very speedy when winning the €34,000 Prix Crystal Palace (3yos-1200m) after her connections had tried her unsuccessfully over a mile. This is the second race that she has won over this shorter distance, both times taking the lead and galloping with ease. “In the Prix du Cercle (over 1000m), she was never in her stride”, explained jockey Anthony Crastus. “1200m suits her perfectly as she has a lot of speed but needs to be let stride on or else she is too keen. She is capable of winning a Listed race for 3 year olds.”
The favourite Orife (Marchand de Sable) never got a chance to show his true ability in this race. Tucked in behind Chantilly Rock (Rock Of Gibraltar), he found himself completely boxed in and found his gap too late to finish fifth. The Andre Fabre trained Time Prisoner (Elusive Quality) finished a length and a half behind in second place with his stable mate Kaiss (Seeking the Gold) a further head behind in third.
