Wednesday 8th September 2010, Saint Cloud (www.jourdegalop.com) Bigzam (Zamindar) had surprised many supporters by finding it difficult to win a Listed race but patience paid off when she was successful in the €52,000 Prix de Tourelles (L- 3yo+ Fillies – 2500m). She put her experience to good use when beating the favourite, Superstition (Kutub), by a length. “I am very pleased with her success”, declared winning trainer Jean-Michel Lefevre. “We have been searching for this Listed win and it is a big plus for her career as a broodmare as I don’t think that her owner will keep her in training next year.”
Last year Daryakana (Selkirk) won this Listed race before going on to success in the Qatar Prix de Royallieu (Gr2) followed by the Hong Kong Vase(Gr1). Bigzam is not entered for the Gr2 at Longchamp, however second placed Superstition holds an entry.
Bred by Haras de Saint Pair, Bigzam is out of Intrum Morshaan, winner of a handicap at Haydock
Park. Bigzam is her third offspring and to date the most successful. She was bought back for €15,000 at the Arqana August Sale in 2006.
Chapeau Rouge – Shamekh lives up to hype
There was much talk about the favourite Shamekh (Shamardal) ahead of the €24,000 Prix Chapeau Rouge (Unraced 2yo Males-1600m) and he did not disappoint connections when winning by two lengths from Icebraker (Iffraaj). Absolutely Yes (Country Reel) was a further three quarters of a length behind in third place. Quickly settled along side leader Black Sheep (Anabaa), Shamekh kicked clear with ease in the final stages to pass the line in front without ever appearing under pressure. He is one of Freddy Head’s most highly estimated youngsters. Winning jockey Davy Bonilla said afterwards: “He is a very serious horse, who works well in the mornings and we were looking forward to his first start. He wanted to tuck in behind the horse in front of him which is why he lost some ground in the finish. This success is not a surprise and I think he will improve for the run.”
Bred by Gestüt Paschberg, then prepared for the breeze ups by Haras du Saubouas, Shamekh is the first foal out of his dam Samerous (Generous), who was Gr3 placed in Italy. She is a half sister to Samando (Hernando) who was trained by François Doumen to win the Prix de Royallieu (Gr2), as well as the Prix Exbury (Gr3) and the Petite Etoile (Gr3). Shamekh passed through the sales ring at Saint Cloud in May 2010 where he was purchased by Chantilly Bloodstock Agency for €210,000 (click here for catalogue page).
Allee d’Amour – Golden Lilac protects family honour
When a 2 year old is out of Grey Lilas (Danehill) – winner of the "Moulin de Longchamp" (Gr1) – they are bound to have a lot expected of them on their first start. This appeared to pose no problem in the case of Golden Lilac (Galileo) and she won the €24,000 Prix Allee d’Amour (Unraced 2yo Fillies-1600m) by a neck after travelling upsides the leader Kendorova (Kendor). Seeing the manner and style that she won in it is no wonder that she is considered among the best of trainer André Fabre’s 2 year olds. Golden Lilac is entered in the Qatar Petroleum Prix Marcel Boussac (Gr1) on the first Sunday in October.
Mikel Delzangles’ Marmaglia (Inthikhab) finished very strongly under Christophe Lemaire to take third place a length and a half behind the Freddy Head trained Elusive Eria (Elusive City).
Bred by her owner, the Gestüt Ammerland, Golden Lilac is the second foal out of Grey Lilas, who was second in the Poule d’Essai, third in the Prix de Diane and won the Moulin de Longchamp (Grs1). Her first foal, Grey Lily (Boreal), won once at Paray-le-Monial and is now in training in Germany where she may soon run in a Listed at Munich. Since then Grey Lilas has produced a yearling by Hurricane Run, who is entered in the Tattersalls Sales. She was in foal to Galileo last year but unfortunately did not carry it to term and is currently in foal to Hurricane Run.
