Thursday 12th August 2010, Deauville (www.jourdegalop.com) Via Medici (Medicean) provided his owner Andreas Putsch with reason to celebrate when winning impressively in the €80,000 Prix de Lieurey Shadwell (Gr3-3yo Fillies-1,600m). The winner switched to the outside of the track 200 metres from the line and was lucky enough to avoid any traffic problems caused by It’s Midnight (Shamardal) who, when in the lead, started to hang left interfering with all the fillies in the centre of the track. “Certain horses were lucky and others less so”, confided winning trainer François Rohaut, who is also responsible for Evading Tempête (Dubaï Destination), who was almost stopped in her tracks in the straight, before recovering to finish fifth. “Evading Tempête was interfered with at the moment that she was coming with a chance. That incident cost her a place according to Olivier [Peslier, her jockey]. But that is racing. She will now run in early September in Turkey [in the Topkapi Trophy, Gr2]. Via Medici won easily. We have known since early on in the year that she is as good as my other runners. She could now go to New York in the Flower Bowl Invitational (Gr1) at the end of September.”
Via Medici runs in the colours of Andreas Putsch who is the owner of the Haras de Saint Pair. In December 2004, he purchased Via Milano (Singspiel) for €70,000 when in foal to Lawman, before selling her on in December 2007, at Tattersalls (click here for catalogue page).
Among the unlucky fillies of the race, Field Day (Cape Cross) was one of the least interfered with. She finished fast up the centre of the track to take second place. “I have always thought of her as a Group 1 filly”, declared trainer Brian Meehan. “She could now go for the Sun Chariot Stakes (Gr1) or the Prix de l’Opéra (Gr1).”
Bred by 6 C Racing, Via Medici is out of Via Milano, who won the Prix des Réservoirs (Gr3) as a 2 year old. After Via Medici, Via Milano produced a filly in 2008 by Holy Roman Emperor who was sold for €20,000 in Goffs, followed by a yearling filly by Lawman, who was also sold for €20,000 as a foal in Goffs last November.
Minerve – Announce makes herself heard
Announce (Selkirk) maintained her unbeaten record when successful in the €80,000 Prix Minerve – Shadwell (Gr3-3yo Fillies-2,500m), fighting off a strong attack from Shamanova (Danehill Dancer) to win by a neck. According to trainer Andre Fabre, Prince Khalid Abdullah’s charge will now be aimed at the Qatar Prix Vermeille (Gr1) in September. In a tactically run race, the 6 runners proceeded in Indian file behind the English filly Middle Club (Fantastic Light). Announce sat on the heels of the leader before drawing upsides coming round the final bend. “She won easily and in impressive style”, announced jockey Maxime Guyon.
“She took her time to find her stride in the straight due to the leader drifting on the bend.”
Shamanova finished in second once again on her second attempt at Group level. Middle Club, winner of the Prix d’Aumale (Gr3) as a 2 year old, had to be content with third place a further one and a half lengths behind. She may return to France for the Prix Royallieu (Gr2) at Longchamp over the same distance.
Bred by Juddmonte Farms, Announce is the first product out of Hachita (Gone West), a winner on her first start as a 2 year old in England.
