Tuesday 10th August 2010, Deauville. (www.jourdegalop.com) The result of the €24,000 Prix des Marettes (Unraced 2yo Fillies-1,600m) had almost been decided before the race was even run. Prince Khalid Abdullah’s Exemplify (Dansili), the half sister of the champion Special Duty (Hennessy), was all the rage ahead of the race and she won in easier fashion than the winning distance indicated Criquette Head-Maarek, her trainer, said afterwards; “The filly picked up the bit early on so Stéphane Pasquier let her go on. On the far side I wasn’t laughing too much! I thought we were going to pay the price in the finish.” But Exemplify still had something left in the tank and despite the softened ground by the rain, she strode out well to fight off all attacks on her way to the winning post.  Exemplify could now take her chance in the Cheveley Park Stakes, in which she is already entered along with two of her trainer’s other charges. On that point, her trainer remarked “She is a filly with a lot of speed. She will go back to Chantilly and won’t run again in Deauville”. The Cheveley Park Stakes is of course a race that she knows well, having won it a record breaking four times. Freddy Head’s charge Nosail (Anabaa Blue) took second place three quarters of a length behind Exemplify with Galaxie Sud (El Prado) a further short neck behind in third place.

Exemplify is out of Quest to Peak (Distant View), who was trained by Bobby Frankel. Quest to Peak is a full sister to multiple Gr1 winner Sightseek. As mentioned above, Exemplify is of course a half sister to Special Duty (Hennessy), winner of the Cheveley Park Stakes, 1000 Guineas and the Poule d’Essai (Grs1).

Crevecoeur – French Navy catches the eye

The €24,000 Prix de Crèvecoeur (Unraced 2yo Males-1600m) featured a very interesting horse in the form of the André Fabre trained French Navy (Shamardal), who runs in the famous colours of Sheikh Mohamed. French Navy took the lead coming off the final bend and after a short battle with eventual second Salto (Pivotal), he won easily by two lengths with his ears pricked. Winning jockey Maxime Guyon declared:

“He won very easily. I have never ridden him in the morning but I liked him a lot today. The first two home were a long way clear of the rest of the field with Fariman (Invincible Spirit) taking third place 4 lengths behind. The latter is the first produce of Fraloga (3rd in the "Boussac") and was the favourite before the race.

French Navy was bred by Darley and is out of First Fleet (Woodman), who won the Coupe des Pouliches at Marseille (L–2,000m). First Fleet also has a 3 year old, Sea Lord (Cape Cross), who has won 6 times in England for Mark Johnston.
