Monday 9th August 2010, Clairefontaine (www.jourdegalop.com) Yannick Fouin’s Vitex (Enrique) left his rivals in his wake in the last 200 metres of the € Prix des Pommiers (2yo Frenchbred Males Maiden-1,400m), to win by two lengths. After an encouraging first start at Compiègne, Magalen Bryant’s charge opened his record on his second attempt. “I was more confident today than before his last run”, commented Yannick Fouin. “He is a serious horse, who is precocious without being very impressive physically.”

Always amongst the leaders, Vitex turned into the straight in front and fought off all attacks on his way to the line. Back in second was Talk About (Holy Roman Emperor), with only a head separating him from third placed Parigino (Panis). On the subject of the winner, Racing Manager David Powel added: “He is a horse capable of many varied things and he should have his first run over jumps in the first races for 3 year olds at Enghien next year.”

Bred by Mme Danielle de la Héronnière, Vitex was purchased for €20,000 by E.U.R.L. du Chêne at the Arqana Yearling Sales in October 2009 (click here for catalogue page). He is out of Vingt Six (Octagonal), a half sister to twice Listed winner Sokar (Slickly) and also Mundo (Poliglote), a talented chaser trained by Thierry Doumen.

Poiriers – Camelia Rose destined for greater things

“I can’t wait to see her in better company!” Those were the words spoken by Christophe Soumillon on his return to the winners enclosure with Camélia Rose (Oratorio) after their success in the € Prix des Poiriers (2yo Frenchbred Fillies Maiden-1,400m). Jean-Claude Rouget’s charge had impressed many people other than her jockey with her performance. Her trainer declared “She reared up in the stalls on her first start and lost a lot of ground. I expected her to run well today and that she would show a little of the talent we see in the mornings. I think she has a bright future ahead of her.” The favourite Réalisatrice (Numerous) finished second two lengths behind with Urban Kiss (Take Risks) a further four lengths behind in third place.

Camélia Rose was purchased as a yearling at Deauville in August 2009 for €47,000 by Horse France (click here for catalogue page). She is out of Solaz (Galileo), who never won on her five starts and was trained by Carlos Laffon-Parias.

Vitiges – First win on the board for Ustilago

Ustilago (Lando) opened his record in the €24,000 Prix Vitiges (3yo Males Maiden-2,400m). Very keen in the past, his character has long been his worst enemy but on Monday he was by far the best horse in the race. He will now try his hand in the Grand Prix de Clairefontaine (L), at the end of August. “I have always thought a lot of him”, confided winning trainer Werner Baltromei. “But he is very complicated; he will now come back here for the Grand Prix”. Jo all the Way (Gold Away) was a neck behind the winner in second place, while third place went to Waldhorn (Slickly) a further three quarters of a length back.

Bred in Germany at the Gestut Roettgen, Ustilago is out of Ungarin (Goofalik), a two time winner and the full sister to Ungaro, a three time Gr1 winner who is now standing at stud. Ustilago is a half brother of Umirage (Monsun), who finished fourth in the Prix de Pomone (Gr2) at Deauville.

Virunga – Emblazon breaks her duck

Another horse to open her record on the card was Andre Fabre’s Emblazon (Monsun) in the €24,000 Prix Virunga (3yo Fillies Maiden-2,400m). The Sheikh Mohammed representative was quickly away from the stalls and took the lead at a decent pace. In the finish she easily got the better of her rivals to beat the strong finishing Mudalalah (Singspiel) by half a length. The Wildenstein representative Parade Militaire (Peintre Célèbre) produced a strong performance to finish third a further length behind.

Bred by Darley, Emblazon is the third offspring out of Ejlaal (Caerleon), making her a half sister to Doe Ray Me (Singspiel) who won twice at Vichy as a 3 year old before finishing second in the Prix des Tourelles (L) and the Prix Fille de l’Air (Gr3) for Henri-Alex Pantall.
