Sunday 8th August 2010, Deauville (www.jourdegalop.com) The self proclaimed “Sprint King”  David Nicholls was successful once again in France, this time with Regal Parade (Pivotal) in the €250,000 Prix Maurice de Gheest (Gr1 - 3yos+ - 1,300m), ridden by his son Adrian. The winning jockey was visibly delighted after his winning, saluting the gathered crowd with his helmet in hand before falling into his father’s arms, who announced; “He is a great horse and I must thank all of my team for their hard work with him.” Adrian Nicholls received a €200 fine from the stewards for abuse of the whip, after hitting the winner 12 times. Regal Parade won the second Gr1 of his career after his success last year in the Sprint Cup (Gr1) at Haydock. This year his trainer is planning to return there and attempt go for a second win in the same race. On Sunday he was the first to make his move in the straight with Joanna (High Chaparral) the only runner capable of posing a threat to him. In the end Jean-Claude Rouget’s filly finished a neck behind the winner with the rest of the field a further 4 lengths in their wake.  “He didn’t have the best run but he is so generous and energetic that he managed to win regardless,” continued Dandy Nicholls. “It was his experience that won the race for him in the finish.” Joanna put up a brave performance as she was the only three year old filly in the race up against much more experienced sprinters than herself. She should now head for the Prix de la Forêt (Gr1) if she remains in good form. Varenar (Rock of Gibraltar) and War Artist (Orpen) were very disappointing, finishing thirteenth and fourteenth respectively.

Bred by Highclere Stud & Harry Herbert, Regal Parade is out of Model Queen (Kingmambo), who has also bred Hot Prospect (Motivator), third in the Derby Trial Stakes (Gr3), and Mount Helicon (Montjeu), who was Listed placed when trained by André Fabre. Regal Parade was sold as a yearling at Tattersalls for 430,000GNS (click here for catalogue page), and then later purchased by David Nicholls for the bargain price of 16,000 GNS as a 3 year old.

Reux – Winter Dream back to best

Previously a good horse before an injury enforced absence, then making a reappearance in handicaps, Winter Dream (Act One) proved his talent once again when winning the €52,000 Prix de Reux (L-3yos+ -2,500m). Robert Collet’s charge fought off all attacks to beat Telluride (Montjeu) by a short head. Marinous (Numerous) was a further three quarters of a length behind in third place. On his last start he was unlucky in the finish (10th in the Prix du Carrousel, L)”, explained the winning trainer. “He is a good horse wjho had a long interruption to his career. I don’t know where I will run him now.”

Bred by Kilfrush Stud Farm, Winter Dream is the brother of Great Pretender (King’s Theatre), winner of the Prix Policeman (L), second in the Prix Noailles (Gr2), fourth in the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1), La Force (Gr3) and winner of the Prix Achille Fould (L) on his first run at Auteuil. Their dam, Settler (Darshaan), won six of her career starts.
