Thursday 4th August 2010, Deauville (www.jourdegalop.com) It is often difficult for 3 year olds to take on their elders in sprint races. However on her first effort at this level over this shorter trip, the 3 year old Poppet’s Treasure (Dansili) almost pulled it off in the €52,000 Prix du Cercle (L-3yos+ -1,000m). Having got the better of the old hand Tax Free (Tagula) after a battle, the half sister of the Hungarian champion sprinter Overdose (Starborough) seemed on her way to victory. But she hadn’t counted on another British raider Swiss Diva (Pivotal), who got up to beat her on the line, after finding a gap, to win by half a length. “My orders were to hold her up”, explained Ioritz Mendizabal, the winning jockey. “She was nice and relaxed but I had some trouble finding a gap, which worked to my advantage in the end.” This race was also the 4 year old winner’s first attempt over 1,000m at this standard having previously always run over 1,200m.

As for the Rupert Pritchard-Gordon trained Poppet’s Treasure, she did not give up the battle when in front but the English filly arrived too quickly for her to have a chance to react. “It is very encouraging for a first attempt at this level”, analysed Poppet’s Treasure’s trainer. “I think she definitely lacked experience in the finish. This performance bodes well for the future. If all goes well she will head for the Prix du Petit Couvert (Gr3) in September.”

Bred by Lordship Stud, Swiss Diva is out of Swiss Lake (Indian Ridge), who won two Listed races over 1,000m and finished second in a Group 2 over the same distance. Swiss Lake has also produced Swiss Franc (Mr Greeley), second in the Coventry Stakes (Gr2) at Royal Ascot.

Luny Sun (Polish Summer) produced an impressive performance to win on his first start in the €24,000 Prix du Logis Saint-Germain (Unraced 3yos-1900m). He never gave up the fight and in the end he got up to beat Reloading (Medaglia d’Oro) on the line by a short neck. “I expected a good debut from him” confided winning trainer Luis Urbano-Grajales. “He should have had his first start at La Teste, but he was frightened by a filly who got upset in the stalls. I didn’t want to take any chances so I preferred to withdraw him. He is a horse that never gives up as he showed today”. A further length and a half back in third was the Rupert Pritchard Gordon trained Wet One (Slickly) who produced a promising performance. The well bred Looking Glass (Seeking the Gold), a sister of the champion Fantastic Light (Rahy), finished tailed off last.

Bred by Bernard Leclère (Haras de la Gicquelière), Luny Sun is a son of Lozère (Le Balafré), winner on the flat at Saint-Malo. Luny Sun is her fourth produce. He was purchased by his trained for €6,000 in September 2008 at Osarus La Teste.
