Sunday 1st August 2010, Deauville. (www.jourdegalop.com)  Many people turned up on the first Sunday of this year’s Deauville meeting only to see one thing; the champion Goldikova (Anabaa) attempt to win her tenth Group 1. Goldikova is quite simply the best known racehorse in France, a true star, and she didn’t disappoint her fans on this occasion. She detached herself from the rest of the field a long way from home to win the €300,000 Prix Rothschild (Gr1-3yo+ Females-1,600m), previously known as the Prix Astarte, for the third time. It is a rare sight on a racecourse but the entire grandstand cheered and applauded the Wertheimer brother’s champion from 200 metres before the line. And despite all this it looks as though Goldikova may only be at 90%, as with last year when she improved greatly from this race to produce a devasting performance in the Jacques Le Marois (Gr1). Nonetheless on thing is sure, Goldikova entered into the record books equalling Miesque’s record of 10 Group 1 wins. She only needs one more win in order to join Dahlia at the top of the list with 11 Group 1 successes.

Trainer Freddy Head said afterwards; “She did it easily. I especially liked that her ears were pointed in the finish. Once she is relaxed and galloping easily then it is all over. I wasn’t worried during the race, she had a great run. The pace was good without being too fast. She wasn’t even blowing after the race; it was as if she had just done a piece of work at home. Nothing can stop her! When she accelerates it is as if her rivals are going backwards. She has an unbelievable amount of class and this is an extraordinary moment.” Goldikova has never been beaten on her four starts at Deauville; “She loves the track here” continued the winning trainer, “She loves working here in the mornings. She needed an easy win today after two quite tough races.”

After her win in the Falmouth Stakes (Gr1), Music Show (Noverre) finished a strong second behind Goldikova, beaten by a total of 3 lengths. Her connections were far from disappointed at being beaten only by such a star as Goldikova and will now aim their charge towards races such as the Matron Stakes or the Sun Chariot Stakes. Since the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp (Gr1), Elusive Wave (Elusive City) had become a little complicated and difficult. On Sunday however connections tried the new tactic of holding her up and she finshed well to take third place a length behind Music Show. She should now head back for the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp in an attempt to avoid clashing with Goldikova again.

A full brother to Goldikova was born this year, making him one of the last crop by Anabaa, who died last year. Goldikova’s dam, Born Gold, has no yearling but does have a 2 year old by Galileo and has returned to be covered by Galileo again this year.
