Saturday 31st July 2010, Deauville. (www.jourdegalop.com) Zagora (Green Tune) proved that she had ever right to be the hot favourite when winning the €80,000 Prix de Psyché (Gr3-3yo Fillies-2,000m), even surviving an enquiry into her interfering with Pearl Away (Gold Away) in the last 150 metres of the race. Speaking afterwards Ioritz Mendizabal, jockey of Zagora : “I found a gap 250 metres from the line and Zagora had so much gas left in the tank that I didn’t even have to ask her for an effort. She jumped the gun a little and bumped Stéphane Pasquier’s filly in the process, despite my best efforts. It is a real pleasure to ride a horse like her.” This Group victory permitted Ioritz Mendizabal to add to his joy at becoming a father to a baby girl this weekend. Placed second in the Oaks, Bikini Babe (Montjeu) once again took second place when finishing half a length behind Zagora. Rumoush (Rahy) finished three quarters of a length behind in third place.
Bred by Éric Puerari and Oceanic Bloodstock (Michel Zerolo), Zagora was purchased at the Arqana August Sales in 2008 for €95,000 (click here for catalogue page). Her dam, Zaneton (Mtoto), was unraced and produced two other offspring before Zagora. She also bred Party Lover (Tobougg), trained by Myriam Bollack-Badel, who succeeded West Wind (Machiavellian) as the winner of the Prix de La Chapelle-en-Serval. A full brother to Zagora will pass through the sales ring at Deauville when he will be consigned by Haras des Capucines (lot 214).
Six Perfections – Helleborine makes history
Helleborine (Observatory) became the first ever winner of the €55,000 Prix Six Perfections (L-2yo-1,400m), a race that was run for the first time this year. Last of the field turning into the straight, she took time to get into her stride but was impressive once balanced. She passed the whole field at such speed that it seemed as if her rivals were going backwards. Winning trainer Criquette Head-Maarek remarked; “She has an amazing turn of foot. She is remarkable and I like her a lot. From her performance today I think she could run over a longer trip. She is still very green.” The Prix Six Perfections has been envisaged as a prep race for the Prix du Calvados - Haras des Capucines (Gr3), but it is not certain that Helleborine will take part in this race; the winning trainer explained “It is not a race that I like for fillies so I’m not sure if Helleborine will run in it. I also might have other horses more suitable for that race.” Two and a half lengths behind in second place was the Godolphin visitor
Helleborine is a full sister to African Rose, winner of the Sprint Cup (Gr1) in 2008. They are both daughters of New Orchid (Quest for Fame), who ran over distances of 2,000m and further.
