Thursday 15th July 2010, Maisons Laffitte (www.jourdegalop.com) Arasin (Footstepsinthesand) was the star attraction of the card at Maisons-Laffitte. Two hundred metres from the line he kicked clear of the field to win the €34,000 Prix Banstar (3yo Males-1,600m) by an impressive 5 lengths. Pascal Bary’s charge had previously beaten Planteur (Danehill Dancer) when winning the Prix des Aigles as a 2 year old, and finished three quarters of a length behind Behkabad (Cape Cross) when he won the Prix des Chênes (Gr3). “He has a lot of quality”, confided Pascal Bary. “He will now run in a Listed over 1,600m in early August at Deauville [Prix de Tourgeville, 5/08].”

André Fabre’s Rostrum (Shamardal) took second place a short neck ahead of Estimate (Westerner). Arasin was bred by Darpat S.L. and Carlos Laffon-Parias, the latter of which trained the dam of Arasin, Arazena (Woodman). Arazena has also produced a yearling filly by Anabaa (Danzig). Arasin was purchased for €100,000 by Chantilly Bloodstock Agency at the Arqana Sales in August 2008 (click here for catalogue page).

Moia – Khelwa on the rise

After two second places while continually stepping up in class, Khelwa (Traditionally) moved up a level once again and won the €34,000 Prix Moia (3yo Fillies – 1,600m). Despite running against fillies with more experience than her, Richard Gibson’s charge took the lead under Olivier Peslier and fought off a challenge from Galaxidi (High Chaparral), fourth in the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr1), to win by a short neck. Rashma (Nayef) was a further five lengths behind in third place. “She is a filly with a very long acceleration”, declared Olivier Peslier of the winner. “She was very brave in the finish and I knew she was capable of battling. She had a good run and is a classy filly.” Khelwa could now run in the Prix de Lieurey (Gr3, 12/08), a Group 3 over a mile for 3 year old fillies.

Khelwa is a niece of Khalkevi (Kahyasi), winner of the Grand Prix de Paris (Gr1) 2002 and the Prix Hocquart (Gr2) before being injured and starting his career as a stallion. Khaliyna (Danehill), the dam of Khelwa, finished second in the Prix de la Cerisaie on her first start behind the champion Aquarelliste (Danehill). Khaliyna also bred Khayrabad (Daylami), a winner over the fences of Auteuil.
