Saturday 10th July 2010, Deauville. (www.jourdegalop.com) Royal Bench (Whipper) had already impressed when winning the Prix Machado by 8 lengths and was cited as one of the Classic hopes of the year afterwards. He was the declared a non runner in the Poule d'Essai des Poulains (Gr1) before disappointing in the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1). On Saturday Royal Bench made up for that performance when winning the €55,000 Prix du Haras de la Huderie (L-3yo Males-1,600m) by a length and in doing so beating a good bunch of horses. “Robert Collet has always told me that this is a very good horse”, declared winning jockey Ioritz Mendizabal, “this win is important has it proves he was right not to believe it when people wrote him of after the Prix du Jockey Club.”
The Godolphin SNC representative Lochinver (Kingmambo) took second place with the Alain de Royer Dupre trained Semos (American Post) half a length behind in third place.
Bred by his owner at his Irish stud farm, Kilfrush Stud, Royal Bench is out of Hit the Sky (Cozzene), who never ran. Her first product, Rain of Melody (Night Shift), won twice. His second dam, Cerulean Sky (Darshaan) ran in the same colours when winning the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr1) and finishing third in the Prix Vermeille (Gr1).
Cochet – And one more for Mendizabal
After twice finishing second, Alshanfara (Invincible Spirit) broke his maiden on Saturday in the €24,000 Prix du Cochet (3yo Males Maiden-1,500m fibresand). He won easily catching Elpais (Altieri), who had attempted to make all, and beating him by a length and a half. In form jockey Ioritz Mendizabal commented afterwards:
“Halfway up the straight I knew we had the race won. He can be keen and Damien de Watrigant (his trainer) told me to take a pull after jumping off.”
The favourite, Bundestag (Dansili), could only manage fourth place but looks to be better than this performance shows. One to watch from this race is Buratino (Kornado), who although finished fifth he put up an impressive display in the straight.
Bred by Charkassan Racing Stud and F. Zouari, Alshanfara was sold for €52,000 as a yearling at Deauville in 2008, and then again at the Saint Cloud Breeze Up Sales in 2009 for €75,000 (click here for catalogue page).
Eclos – Easy first success for Mapiya
Mapiya (Green Tune) opened her record on her third start in the €24,000 Prix des Eclos (3yo Fillies’ Maiden-1,500m fibresand). Stéphane Wattel took the lead 300 metres from the line and was never threatened by her rivals on her way to a two and a half length success. The strong finishing Brave Power (Aldebaran) took second place. Third place went to Pearl Argyle (Oasis Dream) a further three quarters of a length behind.
Bred at the Haras de la Pérelle, Mapiya is the second offspring of Mehany (Danehill) who is a sister of Mangayoh (Indian Ridge), multiple Group placed in Italy.
