Thursday 8th July 2010, Clairefontaine. (www.paristurf.com)It was difficult not to notice Zarkandar (Azamour) at Clairefontaine. Not only is the Aga Khan;s colt a half brother to Zarkava, but he was also very keen on the way to the start. Wearing blinkers and ridden by Gérald Mossé, Zarkandar won the €22,000 Prix de la Pointe du Hoc (3yo Males–2,400m), ahead of English Summer (Montjeu) and Capellini (Cape Cross). “We are not used to putting blinkers on horses for their first runs, but with him it was necessary”, explained Alain de Royer Dupré. “In the mornings, he is too interested in the other horses and doesn’t concentrate on his work.”
The pedigree of
Zarkandar is evidently marked by his sister, Zarkava (Zamindar), an unbeaten champion from her seven starts, and winner of five Gr1s, including the Arc de Triomphe. After a filly by Dalakhani, Zarkava is now in foal to Sea the Stars.
