Thursday 1st July 2010, Deauville. (www.jourdegalop.com) There was much talk around the racecourse about the talents of Wizz Kid (Whipper) ahead of the €55,000 Prix Yacowlef (L-2yos-1,000m) and Robert Collet’s filly did not disappoint. Wizz Kid put up an impressive display in the finish despite seeming caught for speed early on in the straight. “The filly had worked well and was ready today”, confided her jockey, Grégory Benoist. “She made a good impression. She made an good effort to catch Freddy Head’s filly.” Once in her stride the winner forged ahead to beat Katerini (Cacique) by a length and a half. The style in which Wizz Kid won shows potential to run over longer distances in the future. Nitza (Indygo Shiner) took third place a further three lengths behind. The only colt in the field, Parigino (Panis) finished second last.
Robert Collet also trained the winner’s sire, Whipper (Miesque’s Son), to win the Prix Morny, Jacques Le Marois et Maurice de Gheest. Whipper now stands in Ireland at Ballylinch Stud and Wizz Kid is his 11th winner in France. Bred by Ballylinch Stud (John O’Connor) Wizz Kid is the first offspring out of Lidanski (Soviet Star), a sprinter who showed enough talent to finish second in a Listed over 1.200m at Leopardstown. In 2009 she produced a colt by Lawman, another of Ballylinch’s stallions.

Quetieville – War Czar makes amends
War Czar (Pulpit) should not be judged on his last performance at Salon-de-Provence, when he was a shadow of himself. Jean-Claude Rouget’s charge won the €34,000 Prix de Quetieville (3yo Males-1,600m) by fighting off the strong attack of Kavango (Cape Cross). “On his last start, there was no pace”, explained Ioritz Mendizabal, “it should be written off. When there is a good pace he runs to his merits, just like today.”
Quickly away, he sat on the heels of Patriotique (War Chant). Once launched he managed to hold off the attack of Kavango, who finished half a length behind in second. Third place went to Russian Dream (Russian Blue) a further length and a half behind. War Czar is American bred but his older brother, Naval Officer (Tale of the Cat) also ran in France where he won the Prix de Condé (Gr3) in 2008. Their dam, Wandering Star (Red Ransom), ran in England, followed by America where she won a Gr2. Wandering Star produced a colt by War Front in 2008 and also has a yearling filly by Johannesburg.
Bourgeauville – Lemaire steers It’s Midnight to victory
It’s Midnight (Shamardal) won the €34,000 Prix de Bourgeauville (3yo Fillies-1,600m) thanks in part to a wonderful ride from Christophe-Patrice Lemaire. “She is a very reliable filly, who is improving a lot”, commented Pascal Bary when speaking on Equidia. “I hope that she will run again in August in the Prix de Lieurey (Gr3).” It’s Midnight beat Malaspina (Whipper) by half a length with Oyeriz (Equerry) a further length and a half in third.
Bred by the Niarchos’ family, It’s Midnight is a daughter of Witching Hour (Fairy King), who was also trained by Pascal Bary. Witching Hour is also the dam of Holocène (Lemon Drop Kid), runner up to Manduro (Monsun) in the Prix Jacques Le Marois (Gr1).
