Wednesday 30th June 2010, Maisons Laffitte. (www.jourdegalop.com) Lumineux (Motivator) achieved black type when winning the €55,000 Prix Ridgway (L-3yo Males-2,100m). Placed sixth in the Prix du Jockey Club (Gr1), André Fabre’s charge won in impressive style by a short neck from stable companion Royal Revival (King’s Best). “I was a bit worried halfway up the straight”, declared Pierre-Yves Bureau, “but he picked up again when challenged. Winning his Listed is great and he should now go for the Prix Eugène Adam (Gr2).” Lumineux was the last to load and once underway he was close to the head of affairs just behind Sir Ector (Dynaformer). He was going easily on turning into the straight and looked to be a class above his rivals. With only five runners in total in this Listed race, Crosswind (Cape Cross) won the battle for thirs place two and a half lengths behind Andre Fabre’s pair. The Rouget-Aga Khan representative Saghar (Red Ransom) lost his unbeaten record in this race finishing fifth and last.
Bred by his owners, the Wertheimer brothers, Lumineux is the first product out of Mydarshaan (Darshaan), a modest mare who was trained by Criquette Head-Maarek. His second dam,
Mypreciousprospect (Mr Prospector), has produced four winners from five runners including Pony Girl (Darshaan) who was Listed placed over 2,100m.
Soya – Two in a row for Mambia
Race favourite Mambia (Aldebaran) did not disappoint and won easily in the €29,000 Prix Soya (2yo Fillies-1,400m Straight). Joël Boisnard’s two year old travelled at the front of the field before leaving his four rivals in his wake when accelerating finding another gear 150 metres from the line. “It wasn’t easy” declared Davy Bonilla. “The filly was a bit tense which complicates things when running on the straight. The horse upsides me didn’t want to go in front even though we were going a good pace.”
Mambia started her career in the west of France before opening her record three weeks ago at Saint-Cloud. With this second consecutive success she is progressively stepping up in class and looks to have more to give in the future. Like Afleet (Afleet Alex) finished a decent second a length and a half behind. Cédric Boutin’s three runners finished in a row with Irish Chope (Indian Rocket) the best of them in third place.
Bred by Haras du Mâ, Mambia is the fifth produce out of Algoa (Common Grounds), who won twice in her career. Among her other offspring we find La Galerna (Hernando), who won the Spanish Oaks for Yan Durepaire. Algoa is a daughter of the unraced Atlantic Blue, who bred Incanto Dream (Galileo), winner of the Prix Maurice de Nieuil (Gr2) and second in the Prix du Cadran (Gr1) in 2008.
Mambia was bought back at the Arqana August Sale in 2009 for €35,000 (click here for catalogue page).
Pharel – Beowulf successful on second start
“He is progressing but he still has potential to improve”, announced Thierry Thulliez after the success of Beowulf (Layman) in the €29,000 Prix Pharel (2yo Males-1,400m Straight). Pascal Bary’s charge was successful on only his second star, both of which of been on the straight at Maisons-Laffitte. Beowulf waited patiently before making his move early and staying on well to win by a length from Zemiro
(Daliapour) with Numeric (Numerous) a further length and a half back in third. “Everything went to plan”, continued his jockey, “when the others eased up at the halfway stage he started to take a hold. That is why I made my move a bit earlier than planned and he accelerated well in the finish.”
Bred by his owner Georges Sandor, Beowulf is the fourth offspring out of Belga Wood (Woodman), a mare who raced in the USA without ever winning a race.
