Wednesday 24th June 2010, Compiegne. (www.jourdegalop.com) Trille Divine (Marchand de Sable) held off the strong attack from Oloha (Muhaymin) in the final stages to open her record in the €20,000 Prix de l’Étoile de la Reine (2yo Fillies-1,400m). Caroline de la Soudière-Niault’s charge confirmed the promising that she had produced on her first start at Maisons-Laffitte, when she was beaten only by Satu Maré (Namid). “She is a good filly,” confided her trainer, “I only have three horses in training and she almost works better than Han Shan (Limnos), who is a year older than her.” Trille Divine led the small field of seven runners until she was challenged and passed by Oloha 500 metres from the line, but she fought back well to take back the lead from Christian Baillet’s charge and finally win by a head. Trille Divine was very brave but she also showed signs that she lacks staying power ; as her trainer confirmed: “1,400 metres is her maximun trip. We will not run her over longer than that for the moment. She was a bit gree, but she is still a bit babyish. I think there is room for improvement.” Irish Chope (Indian Rocket) took third place a length and a half behind Oloha.

Bred by Olivier Martinez, and originally named Olive de Prim's, Trille Divine was sold at the Arqana October Yearling Sales and changed name at that time (click here for catalogue page). She was purchased by Caroline de la Soudière-Niault for €17,000. She is the fifth of six offspring out of Brilliantly (Priolo), who is the full sister of Brilliance, winner of the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr1) and Pénélope (Gr3), and also third in the Prix de Diane, Vermeille and the Irish Oaks (Grs1). Trille Divine is a sister of the useful Bright Luck (Key of Luck), who won on the fibresand at Deauville as a 2 and 3 year old.

Hippomene – Santino to return to Group company

Santino (Rock of Gibraltar) was the one to watch in the €29,000 Prix Hippomène (3yo Males-1,600m). Fifth in the Mehl-Mulhens Rennen (Gr2), the German 2000 Guineas, Jean-Pierre Carvalho’s charge justified the hype when winning this apprentice race with ease by two lengths. Having galloped at the head of the main group who were detached from leader Wolverine (Take Risks), Santino took the lead 200 metres from the line and was never threatened from then on. His trainer commented afterwards: “After this win we are now thinking of running him in the Meilen-Trophy (Gr2, 8/08) at Frankfurt. He is a nice horse, he showed that when finishing one and three quarter lengths behind the winner in the German 2000 Guineas. He is my best 3 year old in training.”

André Fabre’s representative Jungle Bay (Oasis Dream) finished very strongly to take second place with Benadalid (Green Tune) a further 2 lengths behind in third place.

Santino is a nephew of Seringa (Acatenango) who was third in a Gr3 in Germany. Selana (Lomitas), the dam of Santino, has already bred Sovereign Dancer (Dashing Blade), fourth in the German Guineas before running in the Prix Paul de Moussac (Gr3).

Atalante – First one up for Printemps d’Alsace

Printemps d’Alsace (Xaar) finally opened her record after finishing placed on all of her nine starts to date. Didier Prod’homme’s charge won the €29,000 Prix Atalante (3yos-1,600m) thanks to a nice ride from his daughter Pauline Prod’homme, who tracked her rivals for as long as possible before taking the lead in the last 500 metres. “Printemps d’Alsace likes to come from behind”, explained the winning trainer, “Today, therefore she had the ideal race, she also had her perfect ground. I wasn’t very confident before the race as she has had some problems. She bled a little and had a break for a few weeks, she only came back to me 5 weeks ago.”

Khelwa (Traditionally) et Valpareiso (Kingsalsa), second and third respectively, ran very well confirming their promising debuts.

Printemps d’Alsace is a niece of Pink Palace (Selkirk), who ran in the Niarchos family for Dominique Sepulchre. Pink Palace won a total of 4 Listed races, finishing her career with a 5th place in the Prix Corrida (Gr2). The dam of Printemps d’Alsace, Fruhling Feuer (Green Tune) won a maiden at Nottingham.

Arras – Second success for Darawind

There was a very close finish in the €19,000 Prix d'Arras (3yos-2,400m), with not even a length separating the first three home. Darwind (Sinndar) was the eventual winner, in the hands of jockey Sylvain Ruis, by a neck from Gemo Lotus (Alamshar). Papetiere completed the placings a further short neck behind in third place.

This was Darwind’s second win from 13 starts, the other coming in late May at Lyon Parilly on his only other start over 2,400m. He is out of Miss Hernando (Hernando) who won twice and to date all of her progeny to have run in France have won a minimum of two races each. Darwind was sold at the Arqana October Yearling Sales for €13,000 (click here for catalogue page).
