Tuesday 22nd June 2010, Chantilly - (www.jourdegalop.com) Broox (Ire-Xaar) is one of the top French 2 year old of 2010. There was talk of him running in the Prix La Flèche (L), but his trainer, Eoghan O'Neill, preferred to be patient and instead entered him in the €34,000 Prix d'Halatte (2yo Males-1,200m) which he won easily on Tuesday at Chantilly. In this race there was Broox and then there was the rest of the field. Quickly away at the start, his jockey Olivier Peslier then took a pull in an attempt to tuck him in. He then went on to increase the distance between himself and his rivals without any pressure. “To be honest, I didn’t ride to instructions at all”, declared Olivier Peslier. “I was meant to tuck him in, but after 200 metres when I saw how much he was pulling and that there was no pace I let him stride on. Then he relaxed and it was easier after that. He is a colt with a lot of speed but who can also stay, that is why I didn’t hesitate to leave him in front.”

When speaking to Equidia after the race, Eoghan O'Neill announced that Broox should run in the Prix Robert Papin (Gr2-1,100mT, on July 25th) before honouring an entry made by his trainer back in January in the Phoenix Stakes (Gr1), at the Curragh. The Prix d'Halatte is Broox’s second win from three starts, and he will without a doubt soon be making his name in Group company.

Kanotier (Fr-Daliapour) showed a lot of potential when taking second place, four lengths behind Broox, on his first ever start. A further two lengths back in third place was Jag War (Fr-Meshaheer).

Bred by Julian Ince's Haras du Logis for the Colliers, Broox is the third product out of Miss Brooks (Bishop of Cashel). His full brother, Haybrook, ran three times as a 2 year old across the Channel, with two victories, before being exported to Hong Kong. Broox was bought for €18,000 by trainer Eoghan O’Neill, at the Arqana October yearling sale in Deauville (click here for catalogue page).

Sylvie – Split Trois wins on first try

Yves de Nicolay’s charge Split Trois (Fr-Dubawi) proved her trainer right in supplementing her for this race when she beat the English raider Lily Again (GB-American Post), trained by Paul Cole, in the €34,000 Prix de Sylvie (2yo Fillies-1,200m). Shortly after the start, Split Trois ducked slightly to the side before sitting in behind High Class (Fr-High Yield). Relaxed during the race, she developed a nice action to come up the middle of the track and challenge Lily Again. In the final stages she was pushed out hands and heels to win by a length, despite drifting slightly in the finish no doubt due to immaturity.

“She was having her first run and I didn’t want to be hard on her when she ducked early on”, commented young jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot. “She is a bit green, I purposefully let her see daylight early on so that she had time to pull herself together before asking her to accelerate.” Droit Devant (Fr-Bernebeau) took third place two lengths behind Lily Again.

Bred by N. Hughes at the Haras des Monceaux, Split Trois comes from a German family. Her dam, Auenpearl (Zafonic) ran eight times winning on two occasions. Split Trois was bought for €33,000 as a yearling at the October Yearling Sales in Deauville (click here for catalogue page) by Meridian out of the Monceaux consignment. She'd been sold €12,000 as a weanling at the same venue from the Mezeray to Richard Venn Bloodstock.

Broutillerie – Impressive follow up from Semos

Semos (Fr-American Post) once more made a good impression when winning the €34,000 Prix de la Broutillerie (3yos-1,400m). Alain de Royer Dupré’s representative, who is now unbeaten on his two starts, was taking on a much more difficult challenge in this race on Tuesday. He produced an impressive turn of foot in order to dominate his rivals and win by a distance of one and a half lengths. “He looks to be an interesting horse”, declared his trainer. “We don’t have many options open to us, that is why I ran him over a shorter distance. He confirmed the nice piece of work that he did last week. I think he could do well at Deauville.”

Balou Cat (Fr-One Cool Cat) took second place three quarters of a length in front of Kermiyan (Green Desert).

Bred by Georges Sandor, Semos is a son of the talented Semire (Mizoram), winner of the Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles (L) at Vichy at two, second in the Prix de Bagatelle (L) and third in the Prix Miesque (Gr3), when trained by Corine Barande-Barbe. She produced one winner before Semos, Szerelem (Canyon Creek), a useful horse who has already shown talent on the fibresand. Semos was purchased by French agent Guy Armengol for Malcolm Parrish for €88,000 at the Arqana August Yearling Sale at Deauville in 2008, when consigned by Haras d’Etreham (click here for catalogue page).
