Friday 18th June 2010, Maisons Laffitte (www.jourdegalop.com) This year, the €34,000 Prix Nikkelora (3yo Fillies-2,100m) was run in mid June at Maisons-Laffitte, unlike in other years when it was run in late March at Saint-Cloud. Once again it produced a good performer in the filly Evasion (Sagacity). A little keen early on, she produced an imressive performance in the straight to win easily by one length. The allowance claimed by her apprentice jockey, Morgan Delalande, was no doubt of benefit but make no mistake this is a talented filly who is destined for Listed class in the near future before eventually moving up to Group company. Back in second place was Elie Lellouche’s charge Roche Ambeau (Chichicastenango) with Lady Hartwood (Okawango) a further length and a half behind in third. Evasion caught the eye when winning her first start at Nantes in late March over 1,600m. Taking on more experienced horses than herself, she finished very strongly to snatch the win.

Evasion

Evasion is a daughter of Entre Deux Mers (Saint Estephe), a winner at Strasbourg. Entre Deux Mers is a full sister of the unfortunate Lady Normandy, winner of the Prix Zeddaan (L) and third in the Prix d’Aumale (Gr3) before being fatally injured in the Prix Marcel Boussac when trained by André Fabre.

Evasion's sire Sagacity currently stands at the Haras de la Huderie for a €2,500 stud fee. He's 18th on the French sires chart (7th if you discard foreign and passed away stallions) with 13 winners in 2010 in France and almost €600,000 in prizemoney and premiums so far this year.

Sica Boy – Scorcher burns his rivals

The hot favourite of the €34,000 Prix Sica Boy (3yo Males-2,100m), Platinum (Azamour), who came here off his first win, could not hold off the strong attack of the German Scorcher (Monsun) in the finish, who went on to beat him by an impressive four lengths. Trained by Jens Hirschberger, Scorcher had only run on one previous occasion when winning his maiden at Krefeld by half a length. His trainer has high hopes for this horse and has already spoken of running Scorcher in the German Derby.

Bred by his owner, Baron Von Ullmann, Scorcher is a son of Suivi (Darshaan), a winner of two handicaps in Germany. Suivi has also produced Suestado, also a son of Monsun, who won a Listed as a 3 year old before participating in the German Derby (Gr1) without success.

Gyges – Rostrum makes amends

Loading the first timers into their stalls for the €24,000 Prix Gyges (Unraced 3yo Males-1,600m) was an eventful occasion. First of all it was Rostrum (Shamardal) who caused a delay of over ten minutes by running loose on the track. Then his stable companion running in the same colours, Bon Accord (Country Reel), acted up and refused to load, resulting in him being declared a non runner. Luckily however once Rostrum had been caught it was decided that he should take part in the race as he went on to win by a length. Once out of the stalls Rostrum was quickly sent to the front of the field and only had to be pushed out hands and heels in the finish to hold off the attacks of Daagher (Indian Ridge) and Marakashi (Lando), favourite and eventual third placed.

Bred by Frédéric Bianco, Rostrum was bought for €350,000 in August 2008 at Deauville by John Ferguson (click here for catalogue page). His dam En Public (Rainbow Quest), a maiden after nine starts, has produced good horses such as Kindjhal (Ashkalani), Listed winner and second in the Prix d’Hédouville (Gr3). En Public has produced three other black type horses, but also Acqua Verde (King’s Best) who is the dam of Handsome Devil (Footstepsinthesand), who finished second in the Prix Greffulhe (Gr2). En Public also has a 2 year old colt by Hurricane Run.

Fiammetta – Pianura leaves it late

Giovanni Botti’s charge Pianura (Johannesburg) was still six or seven lengths behind the leading group on turning into the straight in the €24,000 Prix Fiammetta (Unraced 3yo Fillies-1,600m). However she produced an impressive turn of foot when asked for an effort by her jockey Sylvain Ruis. She got up to beat the Maktoum filly Asmaa (Canadian Forest), by just half a length with Aditi (Dansili) a further length and a half back in third.

Bred by the Sadler’s Profile Syndicate (the name of her dam), Pianura was bought for €120,000 at Deauville in August 2008 by Frédéric Sauque (click here for catalogue page). His dam, Sadler’s Profile (Royal Academy), was unraced but produced Spring Tale (Stravinsky), who was Listed in Ireland as a 2 year old.
