Thursday 10th June 2010, Maisons Laffitte. (www.jourdegalop.com) Miss Liberty (Statue of Liberty) won her first important race for 2 year olds in the Prix La Flèche and at the same time achieved her third success in a row. She would do well if she continues to follow in the footsteps of Siyouni (Pivotal), last year’s winner of the €55,000 Prix La Flèche (L-2yos-1,000m). Pia Brandt’s filly is well on her way to being one of the best 2 year olds in France this year. “She has an enormous heart this filly and a lot of character too. She improves with each run”, confided her trainer. “She hasn’t had much of a break since her last run but she has shown me that she doesn’t take her races hard.” Miss Liberty should now head for the Prix du Bois (Gr3), on the 4th of July at Chantilly depending on how she recovers after this success. On the heels of the leaders, Miss Liberty made her move 300 metres from the line and went on to win by one length from Magic Potion (Divine Light), who is also headed for the Prix du Bois as is fourth placed Captain Chop (Indian Rocket). Lone Cat (One Cool Cat), one of the best impressions from this race, was a further three quarters of a length back in third.

Bred by her owner’s l’Écurie D, Miss Liberty is the first offspring out of, Miss America (Spinning World), who ran in the colours of Jean-Pierre Dubois.

Hunyade – Khatawim does it in style

Christophe Soumillon never had to dig deep on Khawatim (Intikhab) in the final stages of the €24,000 Prix Hunyade (Unraced 2yo Males-1,100m). The jockey never reached for the stick, changing his hands only once on his way to a comfortable 2 length victory. Khawatim was far from the most impressive of all the unraced 2 year olds in the parade ring beforehand, appearing to be a little fat still, but he looks to have a lot of room for improvement both mentally and physically. “He is a good horse”, declared Jean-Claude Rouget, “but he has some improving to do. He was above the rest during the entire race. He will be much better at Deauville and in the autumn. He is one of me better 2 year olds who are a better bunch than last year’s generation.”

Contstantly on the heels of the eventual winner, Beowulf (Layman) finished a decent second. “He ran better than I expected”, confided Pascal Bary. “I don’t have many top class 2 year olds at the moment. He was caught for speed and will be better over longer distances”.

Khawatim is out of the sprinter, Don’t Tell Mum (Dansili), and was bought for GNS 150,000 at the Tattersalls October Sales in 2009 (click here for catalogue page). He is his dam’s first produce, who also has a yearling full brother to Khawatim.

La Belle – Satu Mare makes an impression

“When she accelerated, I had the impression that I was coming out of the stalls again!” That was the declaration made by Maxime Guyon, jockey of the German filly Satu Maré (Namid) in the €24,000 Prix La Belle II (Unraced 2yo Fillies-1,100m). Satu Maré was the most striking in the parade ring beforehand and won with remarkable ease by a total of 4 lengths from Trille Divine (Marchand de Sable), with a further 5 lengths separating her from third placed  Flax Harvest (Dubawi), the race favourite for in form trainer Didier Guillemin.

Bred at Haras de la Pérelle, Satu Maré is the fourth product of Smiling Eyes (Mark of Esteem) and her first winner.
