Sunday 14th February 2010, Cagnes-sur-Mer. (www.leblogdeparisturf.com) "I must congratulate Yann Lerner!" announced John Hammond after the success of Pallodio (Medicis) in the €60,000 Grand Prix de la Riviera (L.- 4yos+ - 2,000m Fibresand). "Yann rides him every morning and has been telling me for the last week that the horse was flying." Yann Lerner, who rode the horse for his last success in the Prix de Toulouse, could not ride the horse on Sunday as he is unable to ride at 55 kilos. “The scenario of today‘s race didn’t suit the favourite, Cirrus des Aigles, explained John Hammond. “I don’t know yet where Pallodio will run next.” Cirrus des Aigles (Even Top) found himself at the head of the pack, as Slickly Royal ran on alone ten lengths ahead. The fast pace set by Slicky Royal did however work to the advantage of the strong finisher Eire (Medicean). “She ran very well”, analysed Markus Nigge. We will wait another while before she begins her career as a broodmare in order to try and win a race like this. She could run in a Listed at Deauville. I don’t think that Sky Crusader handles going left handed. That is what he showed at Lingfield and confirmed today.” Pallodio passed through the sales ring at the Arqana Arc Sales in October 2008, after his success in La Coupe, where he was purchases by Shadwell €400,000 (click here for catalogue page). His second dam is a half sister of Sure Blade (Kris), third placed in the Dewhurst Stakes (Gr1) as a 2 year old before going to stud for a stallion career.
Californie – Surprise success for Liliside
“Sometimes it pays to take a chance!” announced François Rohaut, admitting that his representative Liliside (American Post) didn’t appear to have the best chance on paper in the €55,000 Prix de la Californie (L. –3yos-1,500m). “She won well the last time and we didn’t have a big choice of races for her. The soft ground suited her, if the race had been transferred to the Fibresand I wouldn’t have run her,” added the winning trainer. Liliside beat the favourite Tagar Béré (High Yield), after his main rival Istimlaak was declared a non runner). “He did nothing wrong.” confided Dominique Bœuf. “He repeated his last performance but he came up against a very brave and in form opponent.”
Liliside won her first race as a 2 year old at Angoulême, last October, before running in a claimer at Toulouse, where she was beaten by Affaire de Famille. She was purchased for €38,000 at the Arqana October Sales in 2008, by Marc-Antoine Berghgracht (click here for catalogue page). Her dam, Miller's Lily (Miller's Mate), has also bred The Wise Lady, Gr3 placed and dam of Good Bye My Friend.
Osijek – Hard work pays off with Yosolito
Yosolito (Keltos) was the impressive winner of the €20,000 Prix Osijek (3yos-1,300m Fibresand). Quickly to the front, the colt fought off all attacks in the straight, notably from Stormy Dancer (Night Shift) and Kamarimou (Johannesburg). "He is starting to understand what we're asking of him", explained Luis Urbano-Grajales. "He will now have a break before being prepared for the start of racing in Paris, maybe over shorter distances. We gelded him because he was becoming difficult to handle." Yosolito was purchased at the Arqana Sales in October 2008, for the sum of €15,000 (click here for catalogue page). His dam, Fusée Française (Anabaa), is a sister of Kendor Dine, twice Gr3 winner.
