Scoop_041123_011Sunday, Sept. 6th. In the absence of Goldikova (Anabaa), who is heading for the Prix de la Foret (Gr1-1.400m), the Marois second Aqlaam (Oasis Dream) took the grabs ahead of the Irish runner Famous Name (Dansili) and Virtual (Pivotal), previously 3rd in Deauville, in the Prix du Moulin de Longchamp (Gr1-1.600m). The French favourite Elusive Wave (Elusive City) refused to race and stayed in the stalls much to the dismay of jockey Christophe Lemaire. The pace was set by Gladiatorus (Slic), who stayed in front until the stands, where the lead was taken up by Aqlaam who had followed him throughout the race. Famous Name, back in 3rd, then tried in vain to pursue the Sheikh Hamdan representative. Now carrying the same colours as the winner, Oiseau de Feu (Stravinsky) finished well to seize 4th place just behind Virtual.
The win of Aqlaam confirms Goldikova's place at the top of the European milers. The possibility of a race against the Irish 3 year olds doesn't seem to be on the cards, as after the Foret, the Freddy Head runner will head straight to the Breeder's Cup Mile. Aqlaam might carry the flag for her to Ascot instead.
"I am very happy that Aqlaam has finally succeeded in winning a Group 1 because he has had his fair share of bad luck," declared Angus Gold, racing manager to Shadwell Stud the owner's of Aqlaam. "He had a problem as a 2 year old after his debut, then another after winning at Royal Ascot on his second run when he was a 3 year old. He never worked very well this spring but because he seemed well physically we ran him anyway. He definitely didn't have the right ground today although he wanted to go with the leader when he passed him early on but Richard Hills managed to pull him back and he relaxed. He has become more professional. We are thinking of the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes (Gr1-1.600m). Oiseau de Feu might just have well been third on firmer ground, he could go to Dubai for the meeting this winter."
Dermot Weld had no excuses for Famous Name, "He found it hard to come back after finishing 2nd in the Prix Jockey Club last year and he is progressively climbing the ladder. This was a true Group 1 today with a good pace. His jockey thought that the ground was a bit shifty today and that the horse couldn't get hold of it, but the winner was superior."
John Gosden completed the Anglo-Irish 1-2-3 with Virtual; "It was an English style race! A good pace and no dead time. We were beaten by the same opponent as at Deauville but thank God Goldikova wasn't here today! Nonetheless I'm not sure that this track suits Virtual"
