Wednesday 30th June 2010, Saint Cloud. (www.paristurf.com) After a slow start, the Arqana Summer Sale managed to achieve positive results that were slightly up on last year, with a rise in horses sold from 55% in 2009 to 66% this year. With an aggregate of €2,694,800, including private sales, Arqana’s summer sale bounced back 6.3% after a disappointing 2009 renewal.

Arqana chairman Eric Hoyeau stated : “This sale is a bit tricky to assess at it comprises different categories. My analysis is that the two-year-old section has consolidated its level, the horses in training section has played its role by ensuring the turnover of the large stables, and the store market remains difficult despite a relative improvement from last year. Yet the €160,000 sale-topping price fetched by a two-year-old son of Astarabad is evidence that this sale can get the right profiles to the top. Therefore we can only regret the difficulties that we experience to attract good NH types to the public market, be it as stores or as horses in training."

Stores
The stores session performed a little better than last year, when it endured a particularly dire time. The average price bounced back from €12,916 up to €25,073, while the turnover hiked up 70%. The clearance rate also improved thanks to the smaller numbers and stricter selection.
Lot 39 : 2yo Gelding by Astarabad ex. Miss Academy (AC – Vidéo Rock)
Jehan Bertran de Balanda, who trained the gelding's dal Miss Academy, one of the best flat AQPS horses of her time, raised his hand at €160,000 for this gelding from the family of Le Corrézien: “I trained her grandmother, Mademoiselle Wo, who bred Mister No and Miss Palma. I noticed this horse and proposed him to Alan Potts. I am very happy to have bought him.” Alan Potts was very active the previous week at Fairyhouse, notably when purchasing a son of Presenting for €320,000.
Lot 32 : 2yo Filly by Poliglote ex. Ma Royale (Garde Royale)
Nicolas Bertran de Balanda bought one of the stars of this sale for €68,000. This filly is the first offspring of the champion Ma Royale, whose brother and sister Saint du Chenet (winner of the 4yo Gold Cup-Gr1 on Grand Steeple day) and the impressive Tanaïs du Chenet have hit the headlines recently.”She is from a very good family and is nicely put together. I expected to pay more for her.”
Lot 28 : 3yo Gelding by April Night ex. La Pelode (Dress Parade)
The English trainer Emma Lavelle paid €46,000 for this gelding out of the good racemare La Pelode, second in the Grand Steeple de Craon (L.) : “I train her full brother, Tocca Ferro, who I like a lot. He is for the same owner, Prior Syder. He breezed well yesterday, though was very babyish.”

2 year olds
Having been enhanced this year both in numbers and quality, the flat breeze-up session consolidated its level of 2009. The average price of €18,964 is slightly higher than last year despite the number of horses on offer having gone up from 27 to 47.
Lot 87 : Colt by Pivotal ex. Musicanna (Cape Cross)
Paul Nataf paid €55,000 for this colt who is the first offspring of his dam, third in the Falmouth Stakes and the Sun Chariot Stakes (Gr1). “I bought him for Sheikh Al Thani and he will go into training with Jean-Marie Béguigné. He is well bred with a nice action, despite being quite green. We didn’t think that we would get him but decided to give it a shot when there weren’t many bidders.”

Horses in Training
79% of the horses in training changed hands, a satisfactory score. However, in the absence of real
stars, prices were down from last year, with the average settling at €16,994.
Lot 135 : Amico Mio (Best of the Bests ex. Made of Kashmir)
Paul Nataf was also successful when buying this Listed winner for €150,000. “He is also for Sheikh Al Thani, and will stay in training with Jean-Marie Béguigné. The only thing that will change is the colours. He will run in a Listed or Gr3 in France before leaving for Qatar around November.”
Lot 162 : Sir Lagrange (AC – Ungaro ex. Fannie de Lagrange)
Anthony Bromley of Highflyer Bloodstock bought this lot for €91,000 euros. “He is destined for the Million in Mind syndicate. Every year we buy five horses and sell them at the end of the season. I’m not sure who will train him yet. I really liked his first start over jumps, when he was third at Auteuil.”
Lot 203 : Kazzene (Cozzene et Coconut Willamina par Pleasant Colony)
Hubert Barbe paid €88,000 for this decent flat horse who was twice placed fifth in a Listed and won at Cagnes-sur-mer for trainer Fabrice Chappet. “I bought him for Terry Neill, and he will go in to training with David Pipe. He is a good looking horse whose sire has produced talented jumps such as Soprazene.”
