Arqana December - Positive signs for French market PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 07 December 2009 20:57

Monday 7th, Deauville. On the last day of the Arqana Breeding Sale the average price, as with Sunday, suffered a drop in comparison to that of 2008 (- 24 %), but the median was almost identical to that of last year (5.500 euros contre 6.000 euros).

Eric Hoyeau, Arqana’s President, analysed this when saying: “Last year, Monday’s results were boosted by the presence of Royale Athenia et Dame Edith. But if we exclude these two lots, the average price of 2009 is exactly the same as that of last year. We have had fewer good National Hunt mares this year as the confidence in this market is currently unstable. The number of horses sold rose from 63 à 70 %, which shows that we have succeeded in attracting the type of clients interested in this standard of horses, which is lower than that of the first two days. These clients come from Continental Europe and the Mediterranean Basin. As a whole the average price for the sale was up by 5 %. The median increased from €10,000 to €14,000 euros. In conclusion, we are certain that we can continue to improve the standard of mares. The best example, this year, are the mares like Madame Trop Vite et Langs Lashe, who a few years ago would have no doubt been sold at Newmarket. There is now real confidence in the French market.”

Interesting Purchases

David Powell, on behalf of Alec Waugh, purchased for €30,000, lot 539 Shivera (Highest Honor), presented by the Aga Khan Studs. This unraced filly is out of a sister of the champion Shawanda. “She is a very nice type with a superb pedigree. I do not yet know which stallion she will be covered by.”

Alain Régnier (Haras de la Haie Neuve) was delighted after purchasing a Listed placed filly (Prix Zeddaan) for €30,000, lot 664 Help from Heaven (Titus Livius). “I saw her last race and she is very good. I haven’t yet decided if she will go back into training next year. I like her second dam, Heaven's Command, a lot.”
The National Hunt pedigrees were more present in the catalogue than on the first two days. Lot 555, Summer Flight (General Assembly), a sister of the good jumpers Golden Flight and Sunny Flight, presented in foal to King's Theatre, was sold for €27,000 to Robert Bryan. He is an Irish National Hunt breeder who came especially to purchase this mare to add to his small band of mares.
