Sunday 6th, Deauville. As expected, and taking into account the exceptional lots on offer on Saturday, the second day of Arqana’s Breeding Sale was notably calmer than the first. The results are difficult to compare to those of 2008, when the more attractive lots were presented on the Sunday, notably Alpine Rose, Dariena, Célèbre Vadala and Shadiyna. “It was missing two or three stars” admitted Olivier Delloye, Managing Director of Arqana. “But the median was equivalent to that of last year, which shows that we sold the same quality for the same price. The percentage of sale, at 78 %, is very satisfactory.” This second day permitted many Mediterranean buyers to acquire mares of classic breeding from strong families. There were many mares purchased for Turkey, Tunisia and Morocco.
Sylvain Vidal, already made his presence felt on the first day of the sale when he bought 8 lots, continued to buy mares for Le Havre.
He bought lot 419, Plata de Ley (Elusive Quality and closely related to Machiavellian), outside of the ring for €140,000. This filly had been bought as a foal for $500,000 at the Keeneland November Sales in 2006. He also purchased for €100,000 for lot 382, Isanous (Zamindar), a Listed winner when in training with Michel Roussel. “The presence of Mr Prospector in her pedigree attracted me, with the idea of injecting the speed of Le Havre. The mare is young and a Listed winner. Her dam, who has 17 wins to her name, has produced some very good horses. Isanous is a good looking mare who moves well.”
Belesta (Xaar), lot 352, made €100,000 when Hubert Guy signed the docket for this filly. She was previously in training with Freddy Head and ran in the colours of George Strawbridge. The agent was acting on behalf of Philippe Lemoine-Boucaud, owner of the Haras de Rabodanges. “I really wanted this filly, she is well bred and a nice type. She will go into training with Alain de Royer Dupré. We would like to win a Listed with her before she comes back to the stud as a broodmare.” Belesta is a sister of In Clover (Prix de Flore, Gr3) and the dam of Telluride (2nd Prix Hocquart, Gr2).lot 325, Zanora (Kalanisi), a sister of Zalaiyka (winner of the Poule d'Essai Gr1), in foal to Halling. The agent of Mandore International was acting for a new client from Tunisia. Concerning the foals, Eric Puerari paid €50.000 for lot 389, a filly by Hurricane Run, consigned by Haras du Thenney. “The crossing of Sadler's Wells with Danehill has already proved successful” he declared. “The filly will go through the ring next year as a yearling in Deauville. I bought the sister of her dam, Evensong, a Listed winner. I like the family a lot.” Nicolas de Watrigant, who purchased the top-price on the first day, was also successful when going to €52,000 for lot 325, Zanora (Kalanisi), a sister of Zalaiyka (winner of the Poule d'Essai Gr1), in foal to Halling. The agent of Mandore International was acting for a new client from Tunisia. The Australian Gary Mudgway, of Grange Thoroughbred, paid €38.000 for lot 369, a filly foal by High Chaparral out of the maternal family of Crimplene (multiple Gr1 winner). “At Newmarket I purchased The Miniver Rose, a Gr2 winning High Chaparral filly who this filly reminds me a lot of. High Chaparral has had a lot of success in Australia, where his first crop have included two Gr1 winners. It is possible that this filly will return to the sales here next August.” He has already had success pinhooking with Arqana. Last year, at the same sale, he purchased a filly foal by Miesque's Son out of Miss Alleged, for €10,000, who he resold as a yearling last October for €44,000. Like that foal, this daughter of High Chaparral will also be prepared for the sales by Haras de Coulonces.
