Saturday 5th, Deauville. It sounds like Sea the Stars and his connections would not leave the front page alone this year ! In an extremely busy and successful first day at the Arqana Deauville Breeding sale, French agent Nicolas de Watrigant (Mandore International) made the top lot for the champion’s owner Ling Tsui as he went to €520,000 for lot 101, the Wildensteins’ Aquarelle Bleue (Sadler’s Wells) to beat the Japanese stud Shadai Farm’s representatives. The 5yo placed mare was consigned by the Haras du Mezeray (Charles-Henri de Moussac) in foal to Cape Cross and will be boarded to Sea the Stars next season, just like Mandore’s other purchase for the Tsuis, lot 92, the unraced 5yo Alizaya (Highest Honor), a sister to Irish Leger winner Alandi (Galileo) sold €140,000 in foal to Oratorio. “Mrs Tsui wanted these two pedigrees,” said Watrigant, who quoted the owner after calling her up on the phone as saying that she was very happy to invest again in France and that she picked up Watrigant because she’d worked before with his family.
Only once did the bidding exceed the top mark, when lot 224, the 2009 German Oaks winner Night Magic (Sholokhov) was bought back by the Haras des Capucines on behalf of Stall Salzburg (Hans-Gerd Wernicke). Australian interests represented by Damon Gabbedy had been to €750,000 however and an amicable sale was everything but ruled out at the closure of the sale. Consigned by the Haras du Mezeray, lot 177, Isla Canela (Gone West), a 3yo winner in France whose dam is Islington (Sadler’s Wells), was also bought back at €500,000.
As far as weanlings are concerned, 25 of the 32 lots presented on Saturday were sold (78%) at an average €37,540 (+16%). The top lot is lot 76, an Oasis Dream colt out of Whisper to Dream, whose dam is the champion Hatoof. Maggy O’Toole got the colt for €160,000 on behalf of Coolmore. From the first crop of Authorized, lot 122, a sister of All is Vanity (Prix de Sandringham, Gr2), was bought for €110,000 euros by Ghislain Bozo (Meridian International). “I bought her for the Chamberger syndicate (set up by Nicolas de Chambure and Guillaume Herrnberger), which specialises in pinhooking. The filly will pass through the ring next year. All of the Authorizeds that I have seen have been very good looking, and the mother of this one has already produced a Group winner.” Peter Doyle paid €115,000 euros for lot 50 , a colt by Street Cry out of Attima, consigned by Haras de Saint-Pair.
At the end of the day, the results were notably superior to those of the corresponding sale in 2008. The turnover is up 50% at almost €9m with over 78% of the presented lots sold at €51,442 average (up 35%) while the median is almost doubled at 30.000€ vs. €16,000 last year. It has to be said though that the first day’s catalogue was by far the strongest of the whole sale and that last year, the top lot Alpine Rose had been sold €550,000 on Sunday. Arqana CEO Eric Hoyeau was very happy with this hot start : “Even though most of the potential top lots were concentrated on that first day, the proportion of sold lots is much better this term (from 71 to 78%). Buyers from all parts of the World came by and the weanlings market was good too.”
We had to wait for the last lot of the sale to see the Gr1 winning Porlezza (Sicyos - Lot 247), pass through the ring. She was bought for €320.000 by Marc-Antoine Berghgracht, who did not reveal who he was acting for. "It is a fair price for a Group 1 winner in foal to Anabaa, an exceptional stallion who unfortunately passed away. She is still young. I do not know if she will stay in France." At €300.000, lot 174, Towards (Fusaichi Pegasus), a sister of Spinning World, was the second highest price of the day. Presented by Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard, she was bought by Bill Dwan (Castlebridge) for one of his clients.
Gérard Larrieu in his element
Gérard Larrieu made his presence felt on this opening day, especially concerning young broodmares. He most notably bought lot 9, Varsity (Lomitas), for €95,000 euros, presented by Baunemore Stud. “I liked this filly for three reasons: she has shown quality on the track, she is in foal to Hurricane Run she has a nice way of moving. Like I did at Newmarket, I buy first and find clients later. It is usually them who call me!” The agent went to €120.000 to acquire lot 41, Trip to the Moon (Fasliyev), presented by Haras de Saint Pair. “She was a good race mare, a winner of a Listed, and in foal to Nayef, who it is now almost impossible to get a nomination to. It is easier to buy a mare in foal to him! Her foal by Manduro is magnificent,” announced Gérard Larrieu.
Haras de la Perelle signed for lot 12 Anjella (Monsun) at €145,000, who was consigned by Haras de Saint Pair. This daughter of Monsun, Gr3 in Germany, is out of a Listed winner from the maternal family of Aviso (winner of the German 2000 Guinées Gr2). “We have bought her to breed from, we have been looking for well bred fillies. I choose her for her pedigree and her physique. I don’t know who she will be covered by yet”, said Didier Barassin, manager of the stud.
Foreign Buyers in action
Many of the big lots in the sale went to buyers from many different countries. The Japanese of Shadai Farm bought lot 20, Mrs Snow (Singspiel), for €200,000. Listed and Gr3 placed in Germany and Italy she was consigned by Haras du Logis in foal to New Approach. She was one of two mares tested in foal to this stallion presented at public auction in 2009. “Mares in foal to New Approach are very rare on the market. This one has a nice pedigree and has performed at Listed level,” explained the stud’s representative.
The Italian Loreto Luciani was successful when bidding €130.000 for lot 33, Security Interest (Belong to Me) who was consigned by Haras du Mézeray. She is the mother Radiohead, one of the best 2 year olds across the channel. This breeder (Azienda Agricola Luciani) has almost 60 broodmares based near Rome. He consigned the top priced foal at Goffs in 2008 (€280.000 for the only daughter George Washington). Some of his mares are based at the Irish National Stud.
Lot 44, Summer Stage (In the Wings), will head to Belgium after being purchased for €190,000. She was presented by Haras du Mézeray and was sold to Quality Stud, via FIPS (Hervé Bunel). She is a sister of Act One, in foal to Duke of Marmalade. Quality Stud, which belongs to the Terryn family, is situated in Belgium and specialises in breeding competition horses. This is the first thoroughbred broodmare that they have bought in a long time. It is her pedigree that attracted them. The produce by Duke of Marmalade is destined for the sales ring.
Australia was also represented when Damon Gabbedy (Belmont Bloodstock Agency) purchased lot 36, Dowinga (Hawk Wing), presented by Haras de Grandcamp, who was sold for €200,000. She is a sister of the Gr1 winner Dehere. “She will go to Patinack Farm in Australia”, announced the agent “She will go to Casino Prince. It is a well known family in Australia and she has a 3 year old brother who is a good winner out there. She is a very good mare with a promising future.” Damon Gabbedy also bought lot 155, Madame Trop Vite (Invincible Spirit) for €190,000. “I bought her for Wexford Farm. She will leave for Australia, where she will go into training before going to stud. It is a fair price for a filly like this. I think that I would have paid more for her at Newmarket...” Lot 34 , Silversword (Highest Honor), who produced Cavalryman will also leave France after being sold for €100.000. She was consigned by Haras du Mezeray and purchased by Mark Johnston. “She will go to be covered by Shamardal. I only have three mares. I didn’t but anything at Newmarket because it was too expensive. €100,000 is my limit. Evidently the fact that she has already produced Cavalryman was very attractive to us.”
