2008 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère (Gr1 – 1,400m) winner Naaqoos (Oasis Dream) will start his career as a sire at the Haras du Mezeray in Normandy, where he was born and bred. The Shadwell Stud young sire will be offered at €6,000 euros (Oct 1st special live foal).
Bred by Serge Boucheron out of the unraced dam Straight Lass (Machiavellian), from the family of Irish 1,000 Guineas winner Gaily and mutliple Gr1-winner Pilsudski, Naaqoos was sold €280,000 at the 2007 Arqana Deauville August sale by Shadwell. He was trained by Freddy Head and won first time out in the €22,000 Prix de Tancarville (1,300m) at Deauville in August. He went straight to the €350,000 Prix Morny (Gr1) three weeks later, finishing 5th. Back at Longchamp, he won over 7 furlongs by two lengths and scored in the Lagardere, beating 4th placed Mastrecraftsman in the process.
Second to eventual French Derby winner Le Havre for his come back in the Listed-Prix Djebel (1,400m), the speedy colt failed to sparkle in the French 2,000 and in the Maurice de Gheest (Gr1 – 1,300m), his last race ever.
“It is a very exciting recruit for us,” said the Mezeray commercial manager Christine Dutertre. “We are very proud of the support we get from Shadwell Stud since Muhtathir arrived and look forward to Naaqoos’s first season.”
Since his purchase by Shadwell as a yearling, three years after his Barathea brother Barastraight was sold €90,000, Naaqoos’ siblings fared well on the French sales ring : his 2yo full sister was sold €670,000 to John Ferguson and is trained by Andre Fabre while a Green Desert colt was sold €460,000 to Shadwell last Summer.
Straight Lass was barren in 2009 but is now in foal to Danehill Dancer.
