Wednesday 21, Deauville. The market was somewhat more subdued for the third and final day of the yearling sales at Deauville. The average remained less than €24,000 on Wednesday, but for catalogue as a whole there was an average price of €25,700, up nearly 10% from 2008. The turnover just reached the 9 million mark, up 3.8% on last year. This is the second best result ever achieved at Deauville in October. The percentage of sales remained stable vis-à-vis 2008, at around 71%. The 2008 sale was a decline on the previous year when Prime Equestrian entered the market with a €1.7 million investment. In the present context, it was unrealistic to expect a return to the levels of that year. However, the market remained active in October; the new format - seems to have won support despite a few low moments, for the less interesting lots.

The top price on Wednesday for Jim Bolger

Robert Nataf (France Horse) went to €125,000 for lot 348, a daughter of Whipper presented by Saint-Pair, who managed good sales on whole as with only four yearlings Andreas Putsch’s stud was third top vendor with sales of € 448,000. "This filly has everything you could ask for in a good filly in October,” summed up Robert Nataf. “She'll go in to training with Jim Bolger in Ireland. He has not bought anything by Whipper so far but this one is a little stronger than her father, who has made a very good start at stud. "
The Libyan owner Salah El Mabrouk, of the Telis Group, acquired a colt by Mr. Greeley, lot 363, for €75,000 awarded to Paul Nataf and also presented by Saint-Pair: "I must say that I expect to pay twice as much," said the agent. “There are not a lot of Mr Greeley around and this one was very pleasant. The colt will go in to training with Jean-Marie Béguigné in the colours of Salah El Mabrouk." Paul Nataf as always was very active throughout the sale, he signed for 27 purchases for a total of €678,000.
Less experienced in the limelight at Deauville, Angers trainer Joel Boisnard seemed very excited to sign for a purchase of €80,000, Lot 351, a daughter of Kingsalsa presented by Alain Regnier’s Haras de la Haie Neuve - the latter also immediately came up to congratulate the Senonnes trainer. "It’s the first time I’ve bought a lot at this price, admitted Joel Boisnard, who had overcome the challenge of Alain Decrion and his client Jean-Claude Seroul. “She is a super model and I wanted to have her. Mr. and Mrs. Reito Züger followed me right to the end! We had been beaten several times since the start of sales."

French in Action

John Hammond paid €70,000 for Lot 491 , a son of Hurricane Run out of a dam of winners, she herself having bred the Chilean champion Miss Brio. The trainer explained: "I bought him for one of my clients. This may be a late maturing individual but he is very handsome, like many products of Hurricane Run. There has been a lot of talk for them recently at Tattersalls. They are without a doubt the finest first crop of the year."
The pinhooker Jim McCarthen (Gaybrook Lodge Stud) purchased Lot 498 for €67,000 from Haras de Mezeray, a son of Shamardal very influenced by Giant's Causeway, which also helped in convincing him: "He should return to France for the breeze-ups," said Jim. “I love Shamardals, and even more so Giant's Causeways, with whom I have had some success. The crossing with Gone West pleases me too."
Laurent Benoît (Broadhurst) signed €62,000 for a daughter of Slickly (Lot 500 ) which, according to the agent, will remain in training in France.
Eric Libaud took home Lot 365, a son of Tiger Hill who will run in the colours of Prime Equestrian. "The market is very selective and I have to suffer to have the last word! The hardest part is yet to come..." The trainer of Hong Kong Cup-bound Vision d’Etat was quick to act a second time when he also acquired Lot 374, a daughter of Poliglote bred in partnership by Serge Boucheron, for the sum of €43,000.Nicolas Clement beat MAB for Lot 415, a son of Xaar bought for €61,000 for one of his "older clients who do not like publicity,” the trainer said with a smile. “He is a nice colt who should make a good 2 year old. Xaar has had some good winners this season."
Anthony Stroud paid only €65.000 Lot 439, the only produce of Dalakhani in the catalogue, a daughter of Matin de Tempete (Cardoun) by Antoine Lepeudry. The final destination of the filly had not yet been decided, according to the buyer, but the vendor was hoping for a little more.
Lot 449, a son of Medicean out of Million Wishes (Darshaan), a sister of Bago, whose previous produce by Pivotal made €90,000 last year in August (he took second place at Pin au Haras on Sunday for his second outing), was sold for €60,000 to Willie Browne, already in the news for his purchase of Monday's top lot. Again, the colt will return to Saint Cloud as a 2 year old. "He is well bred and I don’t think that I paid a lot for him. He was my pick of the day and I hope everything will go well for him here in May."

With or Without Premium

Charlie Gordon-Watson had been rather quiet in the early days, with only one purchase of €14,000 for Lot 115, a son of Gentlewave. He also paid €52,000 for a son of Verglas out of Moivouloirtoi (Bering), Lot 458, presented by Haras des Capucines. "He is not entitled to the French premiums and he will go to England," said the agent. “We thought that would make him more affordable and that's what happened. He's a beautiful horse with a nice pedigree. I do not know with whom and for whom he will run." The British agent went to €60,000 euros for the last lot of the catalogue, 515, a son of Medicean bred in France by Lucien Urano and Henri Bozo's successful Ecurie des Monceaux.
However, Carlos Lerner knew exactly who would train Lot 466, a daughter of Librettist from Haras des Capucines and paid €60,000 after a long battle. “Eric Puerari advised me to look at her and I was able to buy her for a foreign owner, Mr. Savides,” said Carlos Lerner after outbidding Sylvain Vidal. “She's a nice filly. "
Irish trainer Eoghan O'Neill, who plans to continue his investment in France after registering good performances from his British base, invested €180,000 for 9 lots, 8 of which were on Wednesday, two of which he paid more than €40,000 for, a Motivator (428) and a Holy Roman Emperor (468). All purchases are Frenchbreds or similar and it's a safe bet they will be mainly campaigned on the French circuit. "They are all for English and Irish owners”, said the trainer. “I couldn’t buy anything over the first two days but the market seems more affordable now."
Guy Cherel gave €50,000 euros for a gorgeous son of Martaline presented by Reboursière, lot 476, who he bought for ML Bloodstock, as was the case for the daughter of Poliglote bought for €12,000 (434). "I like Poliglote and thought it was a good price," said the trainer. “As for the colt, I liked him and I think like some Martalines he could be succesful on both the flat and over hurdles."
