Sunday, August 16th. Sunshine, Goldikova dreams and interesting types contributed to the success of the third session at Arqana on Sunday. As expected, the level of business was slightly below the first two days' but the atmosphere was pretty light and the bidding fierce enough to maintain last year's record standards. When everything was said and done, a happy crowd could indulge again knowing that the average had stood at about €79,000 (-5.9%) with almost 80% of the lots sold with the amiable sales. The median was down 7.7% at €60,000 and the gross turnover just exceeded €6.2m, a decline of 11% on the corresponding day in 2008. Global returns are a bit better with an average up almost 4% at almost €149,000 and a median up 10% at €110,000. The turnover is virtually unchanged at €36.0m. Another news : the French were back in the buyers' enclosure, writes one of them, namely Le Frog.
Shadwell Stud, Peter Doyle, Anthony Stroud, Teddy Grimthorpe (who bought the two Cacique yearlings of the sale for €80,000 and €70,000) and BBA Germany were the most noticeable international agents on the spot for the third day at the Arqana Deauville August sale, but the French came back with fresh ammunitions and opened fire in their usual, no nonsense way. Yet the day's top lots were purchased by French agents. Jean-Claude Rouget bought Lot 259, a grey Archange d'Or colt consigned by the Reboursiere&Montaigu, for €200,000. The family is well known by the Pau-based handler as he trained no less than five winners closely related to Tambura, the yearling's dam : "Archange d'Or is a beautiful looking sire and this one looks very good. I bought him with no particular owner in mind. We will sort that out later on." Ghislain Bozo outbid the Marquesa de Moratalla and her agent Gilles Forien on Lot 264, a €200,000 Sinndar brother to Group performers Star Valley (Starborough) and Kandidate (Kabool). "He's born in May but I really do not mind that. He should turn into a nice 3yo. The family is proven and he will run for Erik Soderberg." The Norwegian owner has horses in training in France with Royer Dupre, Clement and Gibson. The Marquesa got her revenge on Lot 310, a Peintre Celebre colt consigned by Neustrian Associates (Bertrand Le Métayer) which she bought €205,000 with FIPS' Herve Busnel, who stated : "We liked him a lot as an individual. He's an outstanding mover. He did not look like a first foal as he looks very strong." FIPS ended the day as the top buyer with 5 lots for a total €545,000, just above Jean-Claude Rouget's seven purchases for €540,000. Lot 245, an Oasis Dream French Premiums graduate born in Ireland, was sold €200,000 to Anthony Stroud. The English bloodstock agent purchased Lot 127 on Saturday for €280,000. Both colts are closely related as the most expensive is out of Seralia (Royal Academy), the second dam to the one he bought on Sunday. Both were also consigned by the Haras de la Louviere. "He's a nice looking individual from a good farm. I find him very active. He's a lose mover too. Oasis Dream has done very well as a sire." David Powell signed a €185,000 ticket for American owner Maggy Bryant on Lot 324, an Oratorio colt whose dam is an Anabaa sister to Group winner Celimene (Dr Fong). "He will be trained here in Deauville by Stephane Wattel. He's a beautiful colt and Stephane just loved him. He also trained Boris de Deauville, who's out of the same family. I also bought a Holy Roman Emperor yesterday (lot 212, for €95,000) who could go to Tony Clout's. I did not think we'd have to pay that much today. The market is very strong." Bloodstock agent Michel Zerolo (Oceanic Bloodstock) and trainer Jean-Claude Rouget are always keen on fillies by Elusive City and it did not come as a surprise to see them battling on against Alain Decrion to secure Lot 273, a Frenchbred filly consigned by Pierre Talvard's Haras du Cadran. On the phone with American owner Martin Schwartz, Zerolo bid €150,000 and got the lot. British trainer Mark Johnston bought one colt, Lot 330, a Hurricane Run ¾ brother to Jukebox Jury (Montjeu) he saddled to victory in the Royal Lodge Stakes (Gr2) last season. The Frenchbred was consigned by Haras d'Ommeel (Hubert Honore) and made €100,000. The top consignor on the day, Aliette Forien (Reboursiere&Montaigu) sold 8 lots for a combined €1.1m and was very pleased with her sale : "It was an amazing sale today. I was a bit disappointed yesterday with some lots. We sell everything and we have to follow the market. But today, even though we had some very good looking well bred colts, I can't believe the depth of the market. We have selected our broodmares with attention and it seems to pay off."
