2008 Ascot Gold Cup (Gr1-4,000mT) third Coastal Path (GB-Halling) will stand in France as a stallion starting next season at Nicolas de Lageneste's Haras de Saint-Voir in Auvergne. The Juddmonte homebred 5yo was amongst France's top stayers last season when he challenged Yeats in his backyard, the Royal Ascot Ladie's Day showpiece, finishing third after an early, cocky effort which did not pay off. He was the only 4yo in the frame though. He was unbeaten in six starts back then, including two Gr2 wins over 16 furlongs at Longchamp. Trained by Andre Fabre, he lost his form after his Ascot flight and never won again. He was put off training on injury and retired to stud. His brother Martaline (GB-Linamix) has been very successful in France since his retirement at the Haras de la Reboursiere et Montaigu. Standing at €3,500, his first progeny is now 3 and has got good records with four winners of 5 races over hurdles, standing in second to Califet on the French 3yo Sires over jumps. With Halling a proven sire now, the combination sounds good for the Haras de Saint-Voir, which also stands Alberto Giacometti (Sadler's Wells) and Sacrosaint (Kendor). He will alternate seasons at the Haras de Saint-Voir and at Pierre Julienne's Haras de la Monnerie in Normandy, along with Epalo (Lando) and Alberto G. Check out his female line with his King's Best brother Crystal Reef's catalogue page. He was sold for Gns 160,000 in December 2008 at Tatts to bloodstock agent Charlie Gordon-Watson.
