Thursday 24th June 2010, Auteuil. (www.jourdegalop.com) Thomas Trapenard had previously announced on the occasion of the last win of Soleil de Sivola (Discover d’Auteuil), that his charge was one of the best 4 year old jumpers and he wasn’t proven wrong when the latter won the €150,000 Prix La Périchole Chase (Gr3-4yos). “I didn’t want to run today because of the heat”, commented the winning trainer. “But his owner insisted and he was right.” Tough as nails, Soleil de Sivola held off all attacks in the final stages especially that of Saccageur (Poliglote), who put up a strong performance in the straight. The anticipated battle between Olé Companero (Sholokhov) and Surfing (Califet) never took place. Olé Companero had to be content with third place, while Surfing could only manage a distant fifth place.
Bred by Thomas and Gilles Trapenard, Soleil de Sivola is the first product out of Neva de Sivola (Blushing Flame), a mare who showed some talent over jumps most notabley when winning the Prix du Bois Rouaud at Auteuil. Her second offspring, Sivola Gambler, is a 3 year old full brother to Soleil who finished 2nd in the Prix des Cévennes.
Sagan – Tanais du Chenet is one to watch
Tanaïs du Chenet (Poliglote) was successful in the €115,000 Prix Sagan Hurdle (L-4yos-3,500m) and confirmed that she is the best 3 year old filly of this year. A full sister of the best 4 year old chaser, Saint du Chenet, Tanaïs du Chenet went one better than her brother on Thursday, who didn’t have his first start over jumps intil the Autumn of his 3 year old career and without winning. Tanaïs du Chenet looks to still have some room for improvement, which was confirmed by her jockey, Régis Schmidlin: “She will be a great filly in the autumn.” On only her second start, Marcel Rolland’s charge easily beat the best her generation has to offer. “My only worry was her lack of experience” explained her trainer. “He didn’t go well early on and she was a bit keen when there was no pace. But she then relaxed and won well.” Magalen Bryant’s representative tracked the leaders before making her move down the outside to beat Las Ventas (Poliglote) by 2 lengths with Katkovana (Westerner) a further neck behind in third.
It was another triumph for the French sire Poliglote (Sadler's Wells), who stand at the haras d'Etreham for €6,000 and is ranked 1st amongst the jumpers' sires in France with almost €1,3m in prizemoney so far this term, that is about half of the prizemoney won by the leading sire Presenting offspring in 2009-2010.

Wednesday 30th June 2010, Saint Cloud. (www.paristurf.com) After a slow start, the Arqana Summer Sale managed to achieve positive results that were slightly up on last year, with a rise in horses sold from 55% in 2009 to 66% this year. With an aggregate of €2,694,800, including private sales, Arqana’s summer sale bounced back 6.3% after a disappointing 2009 renewal.
Arqana chairman Eric Hoyeau stated : “This sale is a bit tricky to assess at it comprises different categories. My analysis is that the two-year-old section has consolidated its level, the horses in training section has played its role by ensuring the turnover of the large stables, and the store market remains difficult despite a relative improvement from last year. Yet the €160,000 sale-topping price fetched by a two-year-old son of Astarabad is evidence that this sale can get the right profiles to the top. Therefore we can only regret the difficulties that we experience to attract good NH types to the public market, be it as stores or as horses in training."

Monday 26th July 2010, Compiegne. (www.jourdegalop.com) The hot favourite of the €55,000 Prix Pelleas (L-3yo Males-2,000m), Lancelot (Bahri) did not have to dig deep in order to come home the winner. Held up for most of the race he was pulled out by Olivier Peslier on turning into the straight and came home easily three quarters of a length ahead of his nearest rival, Altair Star (Kris Kin), who was the leader for Lope de Vega (Shamardal) in the Prix Jean Prat (Gr1). After trying his hand over 2,400m, Lancelot dropped back to 2,000m, which appears to be his ideal distance. When speaking to Equidia after the race, Olivier Peslier said: “He took some time to get into the race. That is why he was out the back early on in the race. He is better over 2,000m than over 2,400m. I always knew that I was going better than the eventual second.”
Lancelot should now run in the Prix Guillaume d’Ornano (Gr2), according to Paul Nataf, who purchased the horse at the Arqana October Yearling Sales for €38,000 (click here for catalogue page). Lancelot was bred by Jean-Charles Coude and is out of Lunata (Marju), third placed in the Prix Yacowlef (L).
Beaurevoir – Torentosa lives up to expectations
Another favourite in the money was Torentosa (Oasis Dream) who won the €24,000 Prix de Beaurevoir (Unraced 2 year old Fillies-1,400m), despite appearing very keen throughout the race. Although she seemed beaten 300 metres from the line she found another gear just 100 metres from the winning post to beat Riqa (Dubawi), niece of Prix Jean Prat and Jacques Le Marois (Grs1) winner Tamayuz (Nayef), by 2 lengths. Torentosa is a niece of Belle et Célèbre (Peintre Célèbre) and looks to be one to watch in the future if she learns to relax in her races as she gains more experience. Gorgeous Sixty (Touch of the Blues), who was bought for only €9,000€ at Deauville, finished very strongly to take third place a further half a length behind and looks to be the performance to note from this race.

Le Frog could not quite believe what he read in the public address published last week by Spanish owner Anthony Forde following his failed attempt to see his French 1,000 Guineas winner Liliside finally placed 5th rather than 6th placing to which she was demoted. Forde did not ask for her laurels back. He simply wanted the France Galop stewards to agree that the filly should have been placed 5th rather than 6th for interfering only once in the final stretch, not twice as originally stated at Longchamp. A video proved that he was right to do so (check it on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1geeX_BZBA).
Everybody knows that the Appeal Commission of France Galop is a joke and that these guys never ever change whatever their fellow members of "The Club" have decided. "Right or wrong, my party", period.
However this time, one of the owners summoned at the appeal commission had added insult to injury by actually saying aloud to Forde’s party: "This is a game for aristocrats, it is not made for soup mongers".
Well if that isn't sheer class prejudice, what is? Even though the person in question is not actually a France Galop steward, he’s bred to become one of them. And by the way, if you only keep the horses owned by aristocrats in the French 1,000, only one belongs to a titled European. She finished 7th. Not exactly the champion’s party, is it?
This incident should not be blown out of proportions. Yet it should not be allowed to pass unremarked. Such ludicrous comments made by horseracing’s so-called "finest peers" remind me of J. B. Morton’s Oswald Thake – and this is not a compliment.
If only it had been said to a fellow Frenchman, able to share such a strange sense of humour, Le Frog wouldn’t mind that much. But to someone who spends money on our nation’s sport, promotes our races and pays our lads’ wages, well, a complete apology is the least the whole episode deserves.
It is therefore with a great sense of shame that Le Frog apologizes on behalf of this loon to every foreign participant to our races, whether they are "soup mongers" or Highnesses, for both are worth the same on and under the turf. |

Tuesday March 9th - Enghien. Princesse D’Anjou (Nononito) should have been the attraction of the day at Enghien but unfortunately she was withdrawn before the start of the €48,000 Prix du Mont Cenis Hurdle (5yo+ - 3,800m) due to the state of the ground. She was not the only absentee in this race; only five went to post with four withdrawals in total prior to the start. However there were no complaints from Yannick Fouin as his representative, Roc de Sivola (Cadoudal), went on to score by 2 lengths from Wycherley (Thunder Gulch). Roc de Sivola has been a faithful servant to his connections, with four wins and five places from ten starts. His dam Miss Raho (Rahotep) won 9 races from a total of 46 starts; she also produced one of Yannick Fouin’s favourite horses, Hercule Noir (Rochesson) a Group 2 winner over fences. |
