Sea the Stars supreme in Arc de Triomphe PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 04 October 2009 15:11
The hot 8/10 favourite Sea the Stars (Cape Cross) won the 88th Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe, Sunday at Longchamp racecourse, bringing down the Parisian house. Trained in Ireland by John Oxx for Chinese owner Christopher Tsui, the 3yo son of 1993 Arc winner Urban Sea had not been favoured by the way the race unfolded when he suddenly jumped out of the field at the furlong marker to score by two lengths, beating Youmzain (Sinndar), second for the third consecutive time in the Wordl's richest turf race with its €4m purse. 3yo Grand Prix de Paris-winner Cavalryman (Halling) stayed on well in third, beaten a head and also a head ahead of King George winner Conduit (Dalakhani). 4yo British filly Dar Re Mi (Singspiel) came in fifth one length behind.
Winning trainer John Oxx, who also saddled the 2000 Arc winner Sinndar, was almost speechless : "It's a great relief. A big relief really. We thought we had the best horse in the race and that he deserved to win but it's the Arc. It's the end of the year and it's easy to get beaten in the Arc."
Beaten he wasn't and the Parisian crowd cheered him home as one of their own, just like they did one year ago with the unbeaten filly Zarkava.
